Kapamilya actor Romnick Sarmenta shared the reason he accepted his role in his latest film, About Us But Not About Us, where he plays the role of a gay professor. The veteran actor revealed that he was attracted to the concept of the film when it was first pitched to him.

About Us But Not About Us is a film by Jun Lana and is an official entry to the Metro Manila Summer Film Festival which is set to happen from April 8 to 18.

Romnick wasn’t given a detailed explanation of his character but was advised to read the script himself to be able to immerse himself into the role.

“I was told that my character was a professor and he’s gay. He gets caught up in this weird situation. But they didn’t tell me how the story was going to progress. I guess that helped,” he shared.

The actor added how intrigued he got after reading the script, even going as far as admitting that he got “teary-eyed” over some of the lines. Without hesitation, he knew that he already wanted to be part of this film.

“I finished the first read-through. I wanted to read it in a way that everything was fresh for me. I don’t preempt what the character would say. So I was going along for the ride while we were doing the first read. There were some parts there that I didn’t expect and I caught myself getting teary-eyed reading some of the lines. I realized how good the piece was,” he said.

The 50-year-old actor shared his insight on how he understood the character he was playing in the film. Romnick related his character to the everyday situation of an ordinary person.

“The way I understood my character, sometimes you want to do the right thing. You want to be helpful. You want to be a human being, but you get taken advantage of like what happened to Eric. You get caught up in situations that every human being will find themselves in,” he narrated.

About Us But Not About Us already made its debut abroad, even winning Best Picture at the Tallinn Film Festival in Estonia. It was well received in other countries as well such as Australia and Portugal.
