The release date for the second season of the Korean hit series Squid Game has been revealed.

On Thursday, August 1, Netflix announced that the upcoming season is set to premiere on December 26.

The streaming giant also disclosed that a season 3 will be produced and is set to drop in 2025.

Netflix posted a letter from series director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk as he discussed what fans can expect in the world of Squid Games in the next seasons.

"It’s been almost three years since Season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place," Dong-hyuk wrote.

He recounted: "On the first day we began shooting Season 2, I remember thinking, 'Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of Squid Game.' It almost felt surreal. I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years as well."

The director relayed that main character Seong Gi-hun wil return to the games for revenge.

"Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either," he said.

The Squid Game creator then revealed that their story will extend until season 3.

"The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year," he relayed. "I am thrilled to see that the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story. We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride."

As per Netflix, Squid Game 2 will follow the story of Gi-hun or Player 456, who three years after winning Squid Game "remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport."

The streaming giant added: "Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it."

Returning cast members to season 2 include Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Gong Yoo, and Wi Ha-jun.

New stars who will be part of the series include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Park Sung-hoon, Jo Yu-ri, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an.

The first season of Squid Game became Netflix's most-watched program and bagged numerous awards. Among its accolades include Lee Jung-jae and HoYeon Jung receiving the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, respectively.

The Season 1 of Squid Game also received 14 Emmy nominations and six wins including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Dong-hyuk, the first Asian director to receive the award at the Emmys.
