Last seen in the ABS-CBN drama series A Family Affair last year, Jake Ejercito returns onscreen this year with the latest Amazon Original comedy-drama series Fit Check: Confessions of An Ukay Queen.

In the series, Jake plays the role of fashion executive Chris who crosses paths with an aspiring fashion designer named Melanie (played by Kim Chiu).

“This is my first time to do rom-com so I guess just experiencing it, nag-workshops din kami ni Kim to build on the chemistry so nakatulong din yun. Naging comfortable kami sa isa’t isa so nakilala namin yung isa’t isa para mag-manifest dun on the screen or on cam,” Jake told PUSH in an exclusive interview.

Aside from delving into a new genre, Jake also shared what it felt like knowing he would be paired with Kim for the very first time.

“My initial reaction was shock. I guess shock and surprise kasi yun nga eh, I’m still relatively new in the industry tapos mabibigyan ng project with Kim considering nga na first collaboration siya ng Dreamscape with Prime Video. Talagang daunting yung idea na mapabilang sa malaking project. Prior to this, hindi nag-cross yung landas namin. Hindi kami friends (laughs).

“Si Kim naman kasi is really easy to get along with. Despite the fact that working with her, siyempre alam nag lahat na si Kim Chiu multimedia star. But when I met her, walang ganun eh. She was very funny and humble, given na yun. Although most of the time, corny (laughs). So napadali yun. Napakadaling katrabaho and yung energy niya naman is so contagious. Talagang nag-se-spread siya ng good vibes sa set namin,” he explained.

Even though Fit Check may have light scenes, Jake said he got to flex his acting chops with some of the scenes with Kim.

“It’s a rom-com yes but may mga scenes din na emotional and heavy na pinagdaanan si Chris and Melanie. We just became a team. Yun yung personally na na-feel ko. Which made doing the scenes with her easy,” he said.

With the series taking a closer look into the world of ukay and fashion, Jake said he is not ashamed to say he also wears vintage clothing. Even with his status as the son of former president Joseph “Erap” Estrada and Laarni Enriquez, the 33-year-old actor revealed what he shops for whenever he goes to na ukay-ukay.

“Yes of course. I’m really into vintage band shirts. Yun ang hinahanap ko sa ukay. My personal style is just chill. Laidback. There’s no shame in ukay. Huwag ka mahiya na bumili o magsuot ng galing ukay,” he added.

Fit Check: Confessions of an Ukay Queen is an eight-episode series, produced by ABS-CBN Entertainment and Dreamscape Entertainment, is set to premiere July 6 exclusively on Prime Video in the Philippines and more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

The series also stars Angel Aquino, Kylie Verzosa and Christopher de Leon. Directed by Nuel Naval.
