Making history: Tennis champion Alex Eala speaks Tagalog in speech at the US Open Junior championships

After becoming the first Filipina to win a junior Grand Slam singles title at the prestigious 2022 US Open Championships, 17-year-old tennis player Alexandra Eala gave the tournament another historic first after giving her championship speech partly in Tagalog

In a video post by sports journalist Dyan Castillejo who covered the event held in New York City last weekend, Alex can be seen getting emotional during her speech.

“Nagpapasalamat ako sa pamilya ko. Kasi kasi kung hindi dahil sa kanila, hindi ko talaga ito kakayanin. Maraming salmat din sa lahat ng nagdasal at nagsuporta sa akin,” she said.

“Buong puso ko itong ipinaglaban, hindi lang para sa sarili ko kundi para makatulong din ako sa kinabukasan ng Pilipinas. So hindi lang ito panalo ko, panalo nating lahat. Thank you,” she added.

In another post, Dyan congratulated the Pinay teen on the historic achievement and for her strong performance all throughout the tournament.

Dyan wrote: “Yessss Dreams come true with hard work dedication and the right people around you. Congratulations so proud @alex.eala US Open Jr Champion beating Czech opponent in straight sets 6-2;6-2 Alex didn’t lose a single set in 6 matches and showed a lot of heart winning every game Bravo Coach Andrien.”
