After being launched as a celebrity spokesperson for the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) during National Aspin Day last August 18, actor Alden Richards shared the reasons he was so proud to do the campaign in honor of his own aspin Chichi.

“One, all I’ve received was unconditional love ever since I got her kasi binigay siya sa akin when she was just a puppy.

“Number two, it’s something to be proud of as a Filipino as well kasi nga ang aspin ay Asong Pinoy. So as much as we are proud of our different achievements as Filipinos, kahit papaano, in terms of sa pag-aalaga ng mga aso, dapat maging proud din tayo na meron tayong sariling atin.

“And the third one is siya yung common denominator namin ng family. So lahat kasi kami from my dad to my mom to my siblings down to my relatives, we are all dog lovers. So when it’s all about dogs, yun yung common ground naming lahat as a family,” he told PUSH.

Alden said that he misses his aspin whenever he doesn’t stay in their family home in Laguna.

“Pag dumadating ako sa Laguna, especially now that I’m living in Manila, pag umuuwi ako every week or two weeks, yung pinaparamdam talaga niya sa akin kung gaano niya ako ka-miss. And parang great stress reliever talaga yung dogs for me. Sila yung nakakawala ng stress ko sa work and kung ano mang meron. Parang unconsciously kinukuha nila yung stress out of you eh so I’m really thankful na seven years old na siya at this point and there’s nothing but love and fun memories with her,” he said.

More than just being a pet, Alden considers Chichi a trusted friend and companion as well.

“Very protective siya sa akin, especially pag may ibang tao like visitors sa shoot. Nasa tabi ko lang yan, hindi yan aalis. Before, pag umuuwi ako sa bahay na pagod na pagod pupuntahan niya ako tapos alam niya na pagod ako eh. So andun lang din siya sa tabi ko. Minsan sa sofa na ako nakakatulog. Pagdating ko andun na siya, paggising ko andun pa rin siya. Ganun siya. Protective, malambing, lahat,” he added.

As the face of PAWS’s I Love My Aspin campaign, Alden hopes to bring awareness to the public about why they should choose to adopt and not shop for pets, especially since there are a lot of homeless animals in the country that need loving homes.

“I’m not saying naman na with dogs na may breed hindi genuine yung love pero for me, really I’m also an advocate for adopting dogs especially yung mga dogs that need love especially yung mga stray ones at yung mga nasa pound. It has more value than the ones na nabibili or to buy your dog. It has more meaning if you adopt them kasi I think yun yung kailangan ng mga aso especially our aspins na nakukuha sa klasada tapos dinadala sa pound. Adopt don’t shop,” he shared.

Next month, Alden flies to the US for a series of shows called ForwARd: Meet Richard Faulkerson Jr. in key cities in California, Illinois, and Florida next month along with Kapamilya actress Sue Ramirez.
