Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena had time to reflect on his 2024 Paris Olympics campaign where he landed at fourth place overall in the men’s pole vault finals. In his Instagram post, the Filipino athlete expressed his gratitude and apologies to his supporters for failing to secure a podium finish.

EJ admitted that everything is still sinking in and he’s currently processing the outcome of the men’s pole vault finals.

“I first want to say thank you to everyone who has followed, supported, and believed in me. 4th place is painful to say the least; and in sports with three podium places, perhaps 4th is the harshest place to be,” he shared.

The Filipino Olympian added how his loss is the reality of competitive sports–– some would win while others would have to wait for their turn.

“I am heartbroken that a single failure cost me and cost a nation I so deeply love—the podium. I apologize for this outcome; such is life as the world of competitive sports can be exhilarating at times, and painful at others. I have experienced both and unfortunately today I am on the other side of it,” he added.

Despite the outcome, EJ remained positive as he was able to be in a better position compared to Tokyo 2020 where he finished in 11th place. His journey to Paris 2024 wasn’t the best as he not only braved physical injuries but also had to fight legal battles against the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association back in 2021.

“On a positive note I am proud of what I was actually able to stitch together for this Olympics, with all the struggles that came with this year; but still it hurts to be this close to an Olympic Medal,” he continued.

EJ maintained that he will take this experience as a learning moment and will continue to work harder to secure the ultimate goal.

“I learned a long time ago to take one day at a time, and that’s exactly what I am going to do. Thank you again for your support and standing by me. I love you all, and we all share a common love and pride for the Philippines…'The good get up' as they say. I have been knocked down. But I will get back up,” he ended.
