The film follows the story of a Thai bachelor named Parin (portrayed by Win) who travels to Hong Kong in search of his missing mother. He encounters a Filipino hotelier named Iris (played by Janella) who helps him navigate love, heartbreak, and healing in the foreign city amid their differences in culture and identity.

In the teaser of the film, Janella’s character had tanned skin which netizens pointed out. The Kapamilya actress defended her skin color and assured fans and movie viewers that this was a creative decision and not part of the plot that involves negativity towards the color of her skin.

“My character is actually a very strong woman. She’s portrayed as someone who’s strong despite all the challenges she will go through in the film… Once you see the journey of Iris, who is an OFW, just really trying to survive, trying to get through her problems, and eventually falling in love. It wasn’t even something she wanted but you’re going to see [it in the film],” she shared.

Janella added that her character had a really strong personality to which a Warner Bros. Executive complimented her for such a realistic acting.

Meanwhile, the films director, Sigrid Bernardo, admitted that while it was challenging for her to bring out the chemistry due to the different languages, Janella and Win made it possible. She revealed that the two actors bonded and she made sure that they would be comfortable with each other while shooting the film.

“For me, the chemistry is very crucial in the film and I really won’t settle for less. I have to admit that it’s another challenge for me because Win is Thai and Janella is Filipino. Aside from the language barrier and of course, these are two different cultures that you have to merge,” she shared.

Under Parallel Skies is set to screen in Singapore and Thailand as well and it will be distributed by Warner Bros. The highly-anticipated film is the debut project of local film company, 28 Squared Studio.
