In an interview with PUSH and other reporters about her new travel series, Liza said that Liza In Korea was made in partnership with a Korean company called JJ Global.

“[We] actually met them through Dr. Hayden [Kho] and Dr. Vicki Belo. We were introduced to one of their investors, and the investor was actually looking for a Filipina celebrity to collaborate with to make content. And so this started back in April and I was in Korea [for filming] for 18 days,” she said.

According to the actress, Liza In Korea was originally made as a treat to her fans.

“So that they can see the fun side of me and just have something to look forward to habang hindi pa po lumalabas ‘yung mga movie and TV shows ko,” she said.

“But there’s also another side to it where they also wanted to introduce the Korean culture through the lens of Korean locals, but told by a Filipina celebrity. So they kind of wanted to bridge the gap between cultures.”

On what fans can expect from her travel series, Liza said, “Ang maganda po sa series na ‘to, I was taken to places that are popular amongst the locals and not really like the tourist-y spots. So I didn’t go to the usual spots where a lot of us think of going kapag gusto natin i-visit Seoul or Korea. I think you guys are going to see a lot of new traditional Korean dishes, South Korean fushion dishes that are more modern. You’ll also get a better understanding of the culture, but also you’ll also get to see like a different side of the entertainment industry, and the interaction between a Filipina and Korean celebrities or business people.”

Having been a longtime fan of Korean entertainment, Liza said her fascination started at around 10 or 11 when she had just moved to the Philippines.

“That was my first time really trying to explore different types of entertainment from different countries, and it just so happened that Korean entertainment was the one that sparked my interest through K-pop. I became a huge fans of Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, 2NE1, like 2nd-gen K-pop,” she explained. “But it kind of went away for a while just because a little bit too early for K-pop at the time. I remember I was getting made fun of for just liking K-pop before, by my classmates and stuff because it wasn’t cool yet, and so I kind of lied low with that. But I always did love Korean entertainment.”

“Around 2018 I believe is when I rekindled my interest for Korean entertainment through BTS, Momoland, and BLACKPINK. Those were the first groups that I kind of started getting into, and then I just went down a rabbit hole. Like, all my time and energy was spent on just trying to understand how K-pop groups work, the fascination of fans with K-pop groups… Ako, I was always fascinated with just how the Korean entertainment companies built and market these groups. I always thought it was just amazing,” she said.

On what makes Korea so special to her, Liza said, “The fact that despite reaching global success — like we see Korean culture everywhere we go now in any country. We see Korean restaurants, Korean fan merch, you talk to somebody and you mention the word ‘Korea’ and they already have insights about Korean entertainment and culture… But despite that, they’ve stayed very true to their culture and I think that’s what’s amazing about them. They’re able to share their culture with the world in a way where people can enjoy and relate to it, too.”

Meanwhile, the actress admitted that she was nervous when she started filming Liza In Korea with JJ Global.

“I’m scared of exposing myself too much but this kind of took me out of my comfort zone,” she said. “But they really just wanted me to be me, to have a good time, so that my fans can see that and just enjoy Korea with me through this series.”

Liza said there have already been talks about doing a Season 2 for her travel vlog series.

“We are in talks of having a Season 2 for this series, and they are exploring the idea of a cross-culture kind of thing where maybe we could explore starting in Korea and ending up in the Philippines [or vice versa]. There’s a lot of things that we’re exploring and I think that will all depend on the reaction of the viewers and by the request of the viewers, too,” she said.

“The highlight of [Liza in Korea] is it’s just a feel-good series that is very fun and entertaining, and I think what they will enjoy is just seeing me because, you know, I’m a Filipina celebrity but I’m doing a very Korean series,” she continued.

“[Actually], I look almost Korean in a lot of the episodes because of how they did my makeup, the way I’m dressed up, the things that they’re making me do, and I feel like people can just have fun and see themselves in me and experience Korea truly and hopefully get ideas for their future travels to Korea if that’s something that they want to do,” she added.
