International drag queen Manila Luzon excited about the future of drag in the Philippines

Filipino-American drag queen and TV personality Manila Luzon recently returned to the Philippines for her official launch as the brand ambassador of Philippine aesthetic brand Avignon Clinic.

During an intimate gathering with the media on Monday, September 19, Manila Luzon talked about a variety of things – from aesthetic treatments, skin care, career updates, and the drag culture in the country.

Speaking of which, PUSH asked Manila about her thoughts on the booming drag culture in the Philippines. Manila rose to fame after joining the international reality shows RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

Manila replied, “The drag scene has been booming here in the Philippines for many years, decades. It’s just now being experienced by the mainstream. And I am so, so excited for the Filipino people to find this new way of being entertained. Filipinos are amazing entertainers, singers, dancers, and now drag queens.

“So I’m really excited that there’s going to be an explosion of drag in the mainstream. I think that it’s really important that people will see our LGBTQ community. They will see what we are like when we take off the wigs and the makeup, and see us as people. We’ve stories to tell and I’m excited for people all over the Philippines and around the world to be inspired by these people telling their stories, sharing their stories with everyone on TV. And to encourage them to, you know, be creative in how they express themselves as individuals. So, the drag scene is going to be huge here in the Philippines in the upcoming years,” she added.

Meanwhile, Avignon Clinic’s President and Co-founder Benedict Sy shared why they have chosen Manila Luzon as their first international brand ambassador. He said, “We have partnered with Manila Luzon to bring awareness, not only about the drag culture but also to represent deeper underlying advocacies, which she stands for.” Believing in the importance of diversity and inclusion, Benedict added, “Your presence here, Manila, your presence here, dear allies this afternoon gives us the confidence that we are not alone in this advocacy and belief. We have each other.”
