As one of the country’s most enduring bands, Side A has cemented its status as an icon in the OPM scene for the past 35 years. This year, the band is set to reunite its original and current members for a one-night-only concert called Then and Now: Redux 360 Side A Experience.

It is set to be held at the Newport Performing Arts Theater at Newport World Resorts, with special guest Clara Benin, on September 24, 2022, at 8PM.

When asked what made them decide to do a major concert this year, Side A creator and songwriter Rodel Gonzales explained why it was an easy decision for the band members to come together again for the show.

“35 years ago when we were doing what we love, to do what you love to do at that moment is more than enough. To be able to play the music that you want to make, to play the songs that you feel great about, and then of course plus na siguro yung tatagal kaya itong mga kanta na ito?” Rodel said.

“And sure enough, now that we’re here in the now, we’re just really glad. Parang bonus na lang yan na until now appreciated pa rin ang Side A. It’s all about our music and our passion,” he added.

Side A keyboardist Naldy Gonzales agreed, sharing the same sentiments as his brother and former bandmate.

“I think it’s a collective decision. We just love what we’re doing and we continue doing it and up to now, we’re so fortunate that people still respond to the music. So it’s just automatic na we’ll do it kasi andiyan pa sila and they’re still asking for more,” Naldy said.

Formed in 1985, Side A boasts an impressive lineup of musicians who have been with the group since its humble beginnings at the Hyatt-Calesa Bar.

These members include brothers Rodel Gonzalez (lead vocals) and Naldy Gonzalez (keyboards and vocals), Mar Dizon (drums), Pido Lalimarmo (guitars and vocals), Joey Benin (bass), and Kelly Badon (lead guitars).

Today, the band is made up of newer musicians alongside founding member Naldy. Among the new generation members are Ned Esguerra (bass guitar), Yubs Esperat (lead vocals), and Lee Von Cailao (lead guitar).

As for sharing words of wisdom to the newer generation of musical artists on how to build enduring careers in the industry, Side A guitarist Pido Lalimarmo says it always pays to be sincere with your music.

“You just got to be true to yourself. I would imagine that if an artist had a hit song tapos hindi pala niya gusto yun personally, parang pagpapanggap ka ng genre mo pero hindi pala ikaw yun. So follow your heart,” Pido said.

Aside from the current band doing gigs all over the metro and in Cebu City this month, Side A also shared that plans for a world tour starting next year are in the works already.

But if fans of the group are wondering what the difference is between the original and current sound of the band, Zaldy shared it’s all about how they interpret the band’s classic songs, which include their timeless ballads.

These classic songs include “Forevermore,” “Hold on,” “Eva Marie,” “So Many Questions,” and “Di Pa Huli.”

“Oo may difference siyempre pero alam naman ng tao yung songs ng Side A eh. Andun na yun eh. It’s actually a group of musicians who love doing their own thing and interpreting the song in their own way,” Zaldy said.
