As one of the most enduring actors in Philippine showbiz, Nonie Buencamino’s career has spanned more than three decades and he continues to inspire the younger generation of artists today. This month, the veteran actor stars in an episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya along with Paolo Gumabao who plays his son who cannot accept his occupation as a garbage collector.
With his younger co-star being very vocal about what an honor it is to get the chance to work with him, Nonie said every project is not about seniority but a collaboration for him.
“Nagtataka lang ako kasi baka he discovered that I’m not what he expected me to be (laughs). I’m older, I’m more experienced, but as an actor, we’re both learning lines and our blocking and ang importante naman kasi kapag magka-eksena, kailangan you are both just two players in a scene. So there’s really not much of a senior actor and a younger actor for the scene to work. Parang sabay kayo and you’re working together as a team.
“And that was what I enjoyed the most about Paolo because Paolo is intelligent and he does not give up and he is not sensitive. So that is what I am most grateful for. And Paolo is also patient. Pag meron akong lines na hindi na-memorize tapos na-cut tapos nandun na siya sa height of emotion, he’ll just do it again. So what is most important is that you gain that camaraderie sa eksena. So it should not matter kung ito yung mas senior, mas kilala, mas magaling or mas matanda. You’re both working on supposedly the same level,” he explained.
The veteran actor also shared some words of wisdom on how to have an enduring career in the industry.
It’s basically getting outside of yourself as a performer and try to portray to your best capacity what is true and real to the character that you portray. So kung kailangan mo maging pangit, kailangan mo maging pangit.
So what happens is that somehow it gets in the way of the craft. Pero palagay ko it’s an age-old advice from people who are very much into the craft of acting. So art is truth. So kahit na commercial, yung mga pelikula at teleseryeng pinalalabas natin at lahat lahat, kailangan naka-ankla yan sa katotohanan,” he said.
