"The best option is ABS-CBN."
These were the words of Rex Ravelo, the son of comic legend Mars Ravelo, on why their family decided to partner with the Kapamilya network to breathe life to the new live-action adaptation of Darna.
He also remarked that working with Chito Roño for the television series is already a dream come true.
It was in 2013 when the Ravelo family signed a contract with ABS-CBN that granted the network the rights to Mars Ravelo's 13 creations, including Darna.
"We signed up with ABS-CBN because we feel that it’s the best platform that we can have. Mataas ang expectations namin talaga. Having Mr. Roño as the director, iyon na ‘yun, e. It’s a dream come true. Hindi pa tumitigil ang goosebumps ko. This is like a dream," he remarked at the press conference of Mars Ravelo's Darna which started airing on the Kapamilya network on Monday, August 15.
Rex added, "Based on [ABS-CBN's] products, I think mas maganda talaga na sa kanila mapunta ‘yung projects. Hindi lang ABS-CBN ang option namin, but the best option is ABS-CBN," he stated.
The son of the comic legend also shared that including Iza Calzado as the first Darna in the television series is fitting since Darna was actually inspired by his dad being raised by a single mother.
"A lot of people don’t know that my father grew up very poor. Kaya nagkaroon ng Darna, dahil na-inspire siya ng nanay niya. Single mother ang nanay niya. Watching the mother raise them singlehandedly, with the inspiration of Superman, he created Darna," he stated.
In the series, Iza portrayed the role of Leonor or the first Darna, a prime warrior from Planet Marte.
In the premiere episode, the first Darna fought a cyborg creature. It was the first glimpse of Iza as Darna filled with action-packed scenes. Iza instantly became a trending topic on social media after the premiere.
In the same episode, Leonor had to start training her daughter Narda (Jane de Leon) to be the next protector of the stone and the next Darna.
It was in August 2021 when it was announced that Iza will be portraying the role of the first Darna in the Kapamilya television series.
"I honestly never thought or dreamt I would be part of this iconic project even as a child growing up, wanting to be an artista. The journey to this has been 17 years for me with a lot of painful parts that I have come to accept with grace because I know this is part of my journey to becoming my own kind of Darna," Iza posted on her Instagram page back in June 2021 after the announcement.
"Grateful to my ABS-CBN Family for this opportunity. I’ve learned to believe in Divine timing and I am so humbled by God’s plans. May this upcoming Darna series make us believe in the hero that exists in all of us because imagine the possibilities of coming together once we’ve all tapped into our super powers? What a beautiful world I see. Celebrating the superhero in all of us today and always!" she added.
