In their commitment to become more inclusive, Miss Universe will allow married women to participate in the competition starting next year. A source that is close to the Miss Universe Organization confirmed the rule change to the global news publication, Insider.

According to the source, the internal memo was sent out to the National Directors of the organization last Friday, August 5.

“We all believe that women should have agency over their lives and that a human's personal decisions should not be a barrier to their success,” the memo, according to news publication National, wrote.

The new rules are set to be implemented on the 72nd Miss Universe as preliminary pageants have already started for Miss Universe 2022. The competition will be held in December 2022.

Prior to the changes in the rules, only women between the ages of 18 and 28 who had never been married and had no children were allowed to compete for the competition. While there have been some changes in who can compete, the age bracket will stay the same, according to a source.

In an exclusive interview with Insider, Miss Universe 2020 Andrea Meza welcomed the changes and was waiting for it to happen.

“I honestly love that this is happening… There are a lot of women that got married young or had kids in their early 20s and they always wanted to participate in Miss Universe but couldn't because of the rules," she added. "Now those women can start or boost their careers in entertainment because of these changes,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Philippines will be sending Celeste Cortesi to the Miss Universe 2022 pageant. She was crowned as Miss Universe Philippines 2022 on April 30 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
