A Spanish prosecutor asked for an eight-year jail term for the singer Shakira over a 14.5 million euro tax fraud case. The superstar was accused of failing to pay her taxes between 2012 and 2014.
However, Shakira claimed that she wasn’t living in Spain during those times and was living elsewhere. The prosecutor asserted that the 45-year-old singer was indeed residing in Spain during the period given.
Documents were provided by the prosecutor which showed that Shakira bought a house in Barcelona back in May 2012. The said house became her home with her child and her partner, football player Gerard Piqué, in 2013.
Aside from the eight-year jail term, the prosecutor also asked for a fine of more than 23 million euros once the superstar is proven guilty. There has been no update yet with regards to the date of the trial.
In a previous statement coming from Shakira’s camp, they insisted that the singer is innocent from all the allegations thrown at her. She considers the trial as “a total violation of her rights.”
Earlier, Shakira refused to settle the case out of court and pushed the prosecutor to set the trial for her. The terms for the supposed settlement offer haven't been disclosed to the public.
The Colombian singer claimed previously that she has been diligent with paying her taxes. According to her, she paid 17.2 million euros that the Spanish tax office said she owed. Aside from paying her taxes, she maintained that she has no outstanding debt with the authorities.
Shakira is known worldwide for her music style and songs. She has performed hit songs such as “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Waka Waka” among others. She is considered as one of the biggest superstars as she sold over more than 80 million records worldwide.
