Filipino-American actor Jacob Batalon is set to headline the upcoming series Reginald the Vampire.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor said that bagging the lead role in the series definitely serves a strong message about representation in the industry.

"It's a very powerful message to see someone like me, an Asian American – specifically a Filipino-American – be a lead of a series," he told EW.

The 10-episode series, which is based on the "Fat Vampire" book series of Johnny B. Truant, is set to put body positivity as one of the central themes of the story.

"I think the most exciting thing for me is that it’s definitely a different take on a very stereotypical trope in that vampire things are usually broody, emotional, dark, and deep," Jacob remarked in an interview with Cinema Bland.

Aside from snagging the lead role, Jacob also served as executive producer of the series. He made sure that the cast members and the crew of the series came from diverse backgrounds as executive producer of the show.

"Diverse actors have been so accustomed to reading things written by white people that make us feel not included. But now writers have become more diverse and this has become a whole movement. We’re seeing Zendayah get major roles in Spider Man movies," he told Deadline back in April.

"It feels like our time. Not just for people of color but for the gay community as well. We’re tired of hearing the same stories from the same people," he added.

According to Deadline, Reginald the Vampire "is set in a world populated by beautiful, fit and vain vampires. Reginald Baskin (Jacob) tumbles headlong into it as an unlikely hero who will have to navigate every kind of obstacle... Fortunately, Reginald discovers he has a few unrecognized powers of his own."

The series is set to premiere on Syfy on October 5.

Prior to headlining Reginald the Vampire, Jacob made a name for himself for playing Ned Leeds, the best friend of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in the Spider-Man films of the Marvel Cinematic universe.

Jacob was born and raised in Hawaii to Filipino parents. He made his acting debut in the movie North Woods in 2016.
