Netflix released the teaser for Blonde on Thursday, June 16. Directed by Andrew Dominik, the movie features actress Ana de Armas who plays the role of Marilyn Monroe in the film.
Based on the best-selling novel of Joyce Carol Oates, "Blonde boldly reimagines the complicated life of icon Marilyn Monroe. Blurring the lines of fact and fiction, the film artfully explores the tension between her public and private life," Netflix said.
In an interview with Netflix Queue, Ana shared her experience working with director Andrew in breathing life to the novel which is inspired by the Hollywood icon.
"Andrew’s ambitions were very clear from the start — to present a version of Marilyn Monroe’s life through her lens. He wanted the world to experience what it actually felt like to not only be Marilyn, but also Norma Jeane (Marilyn's real name). I found that to be the most daring, unapologetic, and feminist take on her story that I had ever seen," she said.
Ana relayed that it took a lot of research for her to execute the scenes in the movie.
"We worked on this film for hours, every single day for almost a year. I read Joyce’s novel, studied hundreds of photographs, videos, audio recordings, films — anything I could get my hands on. Every scene is inspired by an existing photograph," she said.
"We’d pore over every detail in the photo and debate what was happening in it. The first question was always, ‘What was Norma Jeane feeling here?’ We wanted to tell the human side of her story. Fame is what made Marilyn the most visible person in the world, but it also made Norma the most invisible," the actress added.
Ana remarked that the movie "is not linear or conventional." Rather, "it is meant to be a sensorial and emotional experience."
In the same interview, Andrew was all praises for Ana's dedication to the character and to the movie.
"I was really lucky to have Ana because she could just do anything,” Andrew said. “She was so good. She would get there so quickly. Her feelings were just so under her skin, and anything I said to her, she really understood. The scenes would always just come to life because Ana was there," the director said.
Following the release of the teaser, fans all over the world expressed their excitement about the movie.
"Just watching this made me tear up. Marilyn was such a misunderstood strong woman. Can’t wait to hear her story. I couldn’t imagine the waves she would make if she was young and alive now instead of then," one fan commented about the teaser.
"I’ve always said how Ana de Armas reminded me so much of Marilyn because they both have similar auras and now she’s playing her in a movie 👏🏽 I can’t wait!!" another fan said.
"Wow. The trailer alone told a story without spoiling the film itself. Her hoping she can drop into the Monroe persona, and the ending with the reflection laughing while her body remains still, showing us what her mind has managed to reach that place, and even then the laugh being tinged with sadness," one fan stated.
Blonde is set to be released on September 23.
