Netflix announced that it is creating a reality competition spin-off from its hit series Squid Game.
On Wednesday, June 15, Netflix said that it is looking for 456 players for its upcoming reality show Squid Game: The Challenge with a cash prize of $4.56 million or around Php243 million.
"As they compete through a series of games inspired by the original show—plus surprising new additions—their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them. The stakes are high, but in this game the worst fate is going home empty-handed," Netflix said in a press release on Wednesday.
Brandon Riegg, Netflix VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series, expressed his gratitude to director Hwang Dong-hyuk for supporting the spin-off.
“Squid Game took the world by storm with Director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment," he remarked.
"Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end," he added.
For those interested to join, recruitment is now open at SquidGameCasting.com.
Squid Game: The Challenge will be a 10-episode competition and will be produced by Studio Lambert (The Circle) and The Garden (24 Hours in A&E). The show will be filmed in the UK.
The announcement of the spin-off happened following the confirmation that a second season for Squid Game has been greenlit by Netflix.
On Monday, June 13, Netflix posted a statement from director Hwang Dong-hyuk announcing the second season of the global hit series.
"A whole new round is coming. It took 12 years to bring the first season of 'Squid Game' to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever," the director said in the statement.
He extended his gratitude to the fans of the show for making it a success.
"As the writer, director and producer of 'Squid Game,' a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show. And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su," the director announced on Monday.
"Join us once more for a whole new round," he added.
