Having said goodbye to her showbiz career in the Philippines in order to raise her daughter Moira in the US when she was 20 years old, former ‘90s actress Bunny Paras shared that she had no regrets with her decision in an interview with Ogie Diaz in his latest vlog.

“I think dumating lang sa point na when I got pregnant early tapos yung nag-college din ako tapos humina na yung puro guestings na lang, especially after I had a kid parang yung mga roles limited na. Hindi na yung mga pa-cute cute. So dun ko na lang naisip na after ko mag-college I did a regular job din sa hotels and then I decided why don’t I try life away from the stress ng walang partner sa buhay tapos naiwanan ka ng may anak ng maaga. Parang you want to find greener pastures,” she said.

The former That’s Entertainment talent then married Tom Greenway in 2009 and the couple now have three children named Connor, 11; Ariana, 8; and Cody, 4. Her eldest daughter Moira (now 23) is her child with ex-boyfriend Mo Twister (real name Mohan Gumatay) and was born with a rare inherited disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia that causes progressive nervous system damage and movement problems.

“Ang nangyari carrier si Mo ng isang gene. Ako carrier din. Pag pinag-mix mo together, puwedeng magkasakit ang anak niyo. Hindi palagi nangyayari yun at puwedeng mangyari. Eh nagkataon si Moira yung nagkasakit. Which means kulang siya ng isang certain protein na frataxin and na-lu-lose yung ability niya to walk and yung mga nerves niya nag-wi-weaken, yung mga muscles niya nag-wi-weaken until she ended up in a walker tapos parang siyang nag-da-dance, parang lasing. Ganun yung effect. Tapos after nun sinabi sa amin that after genetic testing para ma-figure out ano mismo dun yung mangyayari sa bata kasi she was only 10 years old nung finally na-diagnose siya ng tama,” she explained.

Despite her disability which also sometimes got her bullied in school, Moira was able to graduate from college and is now working at one of the Walt Disney World hotels in Florida and is living on her own. Bunny admitted to Ogie that she is scared for Moira’s future because of her progressive disease.

“Slowly lang naman daw mangyayari. Like in a span of 10 years, magiging in a wheelchair na daw yung anak ko. So that was heartbreaking for us and especially for her, a 10 year old who’s happy.

“At seven years old kung anu-ano ng gamot ang ibinibigay sa kanya, kung anu-ano ng therapy. Kasi na-misdiagnose siya. Tapos sasabihin lang sa ‘yo hindi pala siya gagaling sa therapy. It will just get worse kasi iba pala yung diagnosis niya. Siyempre nakakalungkot na hindi na siya nakakalakad ngayon.

“Yung ikinakatakot ko yung 20 years down the road. Ano yung nababasa ko, yun ba yung makikita ko sa pag-aalaga ko sa kanya, 20 years from now, di ba 23 siya ngayon, so yung prognosis it gets worse over time. So yun yung ayaw mong makita. Like minsan they can lose their eyesight pag matagal na, yung pag-cho-choke nga kasi hindi na gumagalaw yung muscles. Pag nababasa mo yung kailangan mong abangan, ayaw mong dumating dun,” she explained.

When asked about Moira’s relationship with her biological father who is based in Las Vegas, Bunny could not hide her disappointment with her former boyfriend.

“Wala akong nakitang effort, Ogs. Mabibilang ko lang. Nung 15, 16 (years old) nag-graduate ng high school yung anak ko. Minessage niya, inimbitahan niya, pumunta sila. Yung mommy kasi niya mabait sa akin, mabait din kay Moira at saka yung mga kapatid inaalala si Moira. So at that time akala ko everything’s going to be okay kahit na masama yung loob ko sa kanya because from three years old to 16 wala ka talagang nakitang help. Yung pag-sign lang niya ng adoption papers ng anak ko para yung asawa ko maging legal father,” she revealed.

Even when it came to asking child support, Bunny admitted he was not proactive about sending financial help for Moira’s medical expenses.

“I did. So many times. Ano ako, ghosting, deadma. Hindi ako pinansin. Siguro there are times na mag-aabot yung mommy niya ng $100, $200 pag kunwari may okasyon. Pero sobrang [ilang] libo naman yung expenses namin pagdating kay Moira.

“Sige na lang, huwag na lang yung pera. Bigyan mo na lang ng panahon. Ipasyal mo. Make time. Iparamdam mo naman dun sa bata na part din siya ng immediate family mo. Yun yung sana gusto kong makita.

“Kasi pag nasa Vegas kami, taga Las Viegas (si Mo) ngayon. Siguro mga four years ago pag nag-ho-hotel kami, sasabihin ni Moira, ‘Oh they messaged me kasi grandma is there. Can they see me? Can grandma see me?’ Tapos sasabihin naman niya, ’Mo will pick you up from the lobby.’ Pinapayagan ko sabi ko ‘Go ahead, Moira.’ So akala ko everything was good kahit papano,” she recalled.

Before the end of their interview, Bunny shared her hopes that Mo would start to make an effort to be more present in Moira’s life while he still can.

“Hindi ko alam kung anong nasa utak niya eh. Kasi hindi naman mahirap mahalin ang sarili mong anak. Sarili mong dugo yan eh. Parang kung may galit siya sa akin, ‘wag niya nang idamay si Moira. Mahalin niya.

“At saka tinatanong ko sa Diyos, ‘Ba’t kaya ibinigay sa akin ‘tong pagsubok na ‘to?’ To see my own child like that, parang sobrang depressing naman nun. St saka napaka-lovable ni Moira. Nakakahiya nga parang panawagan pa, alam mo yun (laughs). Pero kung ayaw nila okay lang. Sanay na kami. We’ve learned to move on nang wala sila there consistently,” she added.
