Last year, Sharon Cuneta inspired her fans by revealing a healthier and leaner looking body. The 56-year-old singer, who is set to perform with Regine Velasquez in the Iconic concert next month at the Marriott Hotel in Resorts World Manila admitted to PUSH in an exclusive interview about being offended when people automatically assume she only lost weight by having surgery.
“I get comments about my weight loss. It’s taken me six years. Minsan na-o-offend ako sa biglang ka lang nakita, sasabihin, ‘Ay ang bilis. Anong ginawa nito?’ You know lipo cannot take away your fat, it can remove temporarily. I’ve had it before. It’s not permanent. You have to discipline yourself. Otherwise it will just transfer to other parts of your body. Yung iba sabi, ‘Did you have gastric bypass surgery?’ I’m too scared for that. I have family that has had that done and it’s more psychological than anything after the surgery na hindi siya happy, ganun. And it’s too scary kasi lamang loob. If I wanted to do it, I would’ve done it maybe 10, 15 years ago. Why would I have waited so long? So gastric bypass no,” she said.
Sharon admitted she is proud that she did not resort to drastic weight loss methods and has managed to keep all the weight off since last year to maintain her size 10 body.
“I’m very tamad to exercise because I’m thankful sa [FPJ’s] Ang Probinsyano na nakakatakbo takbo ako. Pero when I’m working kasi, I expend a lot of energy. So it makes me happy. And then, it’s taken me six years to get here and I’m still a work in progress. You know what, kung hindi ako artista, hindi ako vain. That’s why for 15 years I stayed really way overweight. I was obese. Because I think I was content with my life and then at the same time it made me very sad because I could no longer do what I love which is to act,” she said.
The Iconic concert performer also revealed how British singer Adele inspired her weight loss journey.
“Although I had Adele to look up to and say, ‘Yeah it’s the voice. It’s the whole package, it’s not just the weight. It’s not just the looks.’ I’m sure she inspired a lot of people also because it took her a year or two to lose her weight. It’s taken me six years. Pero yung iba hindi ka naman nakikita regularly tapos bigla ka lang makikita, kung ano ano na iniisip (laughs). It’s taken me six years and I’m still in the process because hindi pa ako bumabalik dun sa dati. Although meron na akong movies nung ganito ang weight ko. It’s really a sacrifice but you don’t have to be in a hurry. You can do it slowly but surely. Let’s say you backslide and you binge today, bawi ka na lang tomorrow. So if I want to eat dessert I will taste kasi hindi mo naman kailangan ubusin yung buong cake. Kasi pag na-satisfy mo na yung taste buds mo, okay ka na. And I’ve lost about 85 pounds already by now in six years,” she explained.
To the women who have been inspired by her weight loss, Sharon shared some words of advice and inspiration.
“First of all, be happy with what you are, with what God gave you and what you have, whether it’s your body or your talents. Find your gifts and find out what you can do with them.
“Because everyone has a gift. And if you find yours, then you will not only make other people happy, but you make yourself happy as well because you’re doing what you love and what you were born to do. And I really believe we were all born to do something,” she added.
