The annual Met Gala is often referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out” for the parade of well-known personalities in over-the-top, glamorous gowns and suits. But perhaps the biggest surprise in recent years was when Kim Kardashian showed up at the fundraising benefit wearing one of the late Marilyn Monroe’s most iconic dresses.

Kim turned heads when she walked the red carpet of this year’s Met Gala wearing the $4.8 million dress Marilyn Monroe used when she sang “Happy Birthday” to former US president John F. Kennedy 60 years ago.

According to a report from TMZ, Kim wore the real dress on the red carpet but changed into a “replica” dress during the event. The dress worn by Marilyn in 1962 hasn’t been washed since then, according to the same report.

In an interview with Vogue, Kim revealed she tried wearing the dress months before the Met Gala but it didn’t fit. So, Kim went on a restrictive diet and exercise regime to make what seemed to be impossible, almost possible.

Despite her efforts, the dress didn’t zip because of her curves. So, they tried to cover the opening with a string and cover it with the coat which was originally intended as an accessory.

“Can we use that tie and tie it and keep it open?” Kim said as seen in a video shared by TMZ. “What if we did that and put a fur over?”  she added.

In 2016, Ripley's bought the dress at Julien's Auctions for $4.81 million.

The Met Gala event, attended by some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, aims to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It was held last May 3, Philippine time.
