EXCLUSIVE: Daniel Padilla is proud of younger sister Carmella Ford: ‘I think it’s in the blood’

After competing in the Star Magic 30th All Star Games badminton event, Daniel Padilla shared that his connection with the sport began way, way back after years of watching his mom Karla Estrada play it when he was younger.

“Bata pa ako, kahit saan pumunta nanay ko kasama ako. So nung bata ako yung mga laro niya dati Star Olympics pa, may mga ganun pa. Tapos pag nag-te-training si ermat sumasama lang ako nanunuod na ako sa kanya ever since. Ngayon lang hindi siya makapalo ng maigi kasi na-ACL (anterior cruciate ligament injury) ermat ko eh,” he said.

Even though his 2 Good 2 Be True leading lady was not present during the event, DJ admitted he actually decided to take up badminton because he wanted to be able to play a sport together with Kathryn Bernardo.

“Sabay kami nag-start mag-badminton ni Kathryn kasi wala kaming sport na puwede kaming maglaro pareho so pumasa kami kay coach (and national badminton player) Kennie Asuncion. Nag-train kami. So may sport na kami at dun nagsimula yun,” he said.

After taking home the men’s doubles title with partner Neil Coleta, DJ shared that he was relieved to know all their effort to practice finally paid off.

“Siyempre masaya ako kasi trinabaho din namin ni Neil (Coleta) dahil ang tagal kong huminto nung nagkaroon ng Omicron at kung anu-ano. Tigil kami mag-traning. So itong past two weeks palo kami ng palo para bumalik lang yung kapa,” he admitted.

During the women’s volleyball event, DJ was seen watching the game closely from the sidelines and cheering on his younger sister Carmella Ford who was making her debut performance at the Star Magic Games this year. Also, the team captain of the Star Magic Lady Spikers and MVP was DJ’s cousin Analain Salvador. The 27-year-old actor shared just how proud he was of his loved ones after watching them win their game against Team Star Hunt.

“I think it’s in the blood. Parang athletic talaga yung mga lahi namin. Hindi naman sobra pero mahusay talaga si Analain maglaro and Carmella also. I’m just very proud. Ang sarap manuod,” he said.

DJ also revealed that his sister first started playing the sport before the pandemic and how proud he was of how she played in the event.

“Hindi naman ganun katagal. Parang three years pa lang,” he admitted.

The 2 Good 2 Be True actor also shared that his sister is the splitting image of their mom Karla. “Sobra. Ganyan itsura ng ermat ko nung bata siya. Karlang Karla,” he added.

Carmella is one of DJ’s siblings with their mom Karla along with their other siblings JC and Magui.
