While doing pre-production for her latest sitcom My Papa Pi, director Cathy Garcia-Molina revealed they originally had Angelica Panganiban in mind for the lead actress role. Pia Wurtzbach taking her place was a blessing in disguise.

“Lahat ng cast na ’to handpicked. Not because they’re my friends, but because they’re good. And most of all, mababait silang artista. Kasi siyempre napakabait ng mga bida ko. Dapat rin lang ang babait din ng supporting cast. Ako lang ang puwedeng maldita dito (laughs). When it was originally offered to me, yes po (Angelica Panganiban was part of it). But then nagkaroon ng bagong project si Angelica kaya very thankful naman kami kay Queen P, kay mama P na kami’y pinagbigyan niya sa schedule,” she said.

Aside from having a specially made set inside the network compound, My Papa Pi is also a special project for direk Cathy because of its more upbeat vibe as compared to her previous television projects like La Luna Sangre, Dolce Amore, and Pangako Sa ‘Yo which was more of heavy drama.

“Well actually sa set ko naman, bawal talaga malungkot. Normally naman talaga. Merong blessing talaga na dapat masaya lagi. kaya lang itong set namin extra saya. Dala na rin siguro na sweetcom siya, so alam namin lahat na kami ay dapat magagaan lang. Patawa lang lahat. Masaya. Extra saya. Pinagawa yung set kasi first and foremost, for the safety of everyone. Alam naman natin na kahit ako, hindi naman ako mag-shu-shoot outside kung hindi rin lang safe. I have a family to protect also. So does everyone. So yun ang very main reason why. Pangalawa, para hindi rin kami nakaabala. Kasi normally pag nag-shu-shooting ka, naaabala mo yung kalye. So dito perfect kasi hindi namin sila maaabala. Safe a ng lahat. Everybody happy,” she explained.

The kapamilya director also talked about the chemistry between her lead stars Piolo Pascual and Pia Wurtzbach who are being paired onscreen for the very first time.

“Sobrang okay na okay sila. Ganun pag magagaling na artista at very open, magkakaroon ng chemistry. Swak. Actually (yung work nila) I will not call it pagbabago. Actually ano siya, surprise. Maraming bagay akong nakikitang kaya pala nila gawin dito. Kahit sila nasusurpresa sa sarili nila. Hindi nila alam kaya nila gawin at nagagawa nila. Ganun ata talaga pag masaya yung set at lahat loko-loko,” she shared.

Despite having to shoot the series while the entire country was on lockdown, direk Cathy said her biggest challenge on the set was not a negative experience.

“Actually challenge patahimikin sila (laughs). Napaka-iingay pag nagsama-sama kasi sobra silang close… Masayang masaya yung set. Everybody’s game. Sabi nga ni PJ, pag hindi ka naging game, KJ ang dating mo. So sakay ka na lang ‘di ba?” she added.
