With the country’s longest running drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya featuring the life story of Pinoy Big Brother housemate Karen Bordador in a two-part International Women’s month special on March 12 (Saturday) and 19 (Saturday), veteran actress Shamaine Buencamino said she was honored when she offered to play the role of Karen’s mother Norie who supported her daughter throughout her five-year incarceration inside the Pasig City Jail.

“Norie’s love for Karen is beyond words. She almost gave up her own life just to make sure Karen is supported and that she’s safe inside the jail. Ang hirap ng pinagdaanan nila talaga nila pero the strength of a mother’s love buhay na buhay sa kuwento nila,” she said during the MMK mediacon.

As part of MMK’s International Women’s Month celebration, Shamaine said that there is no more question when it comes to gender equality and discrimation against women.

“Ang feeling ko parang wala na yan eh. Hindi naman sa wala na pero napakalakas na ng mga babae ngayon. Super strong. And we have shown it and we are proving it everywhere, not just here in the Philippines but internationally. And I think the strength of women, the way they’ve evolved, is by accepting our femininity. What makes us strong is our sensitivity. It’s not physical strength. We’re not really here to compete with men and prove that we are the same. It’s more of we are here to complement men. We are here to complete men. They won’t be complete without us. We are the givers of life.

“Can you imagine how strong we are, sa atin nanggagaling yung susunod na henerasyon na hindi rin namin maibibigay without the men. I think this will continue to evolve because we are in a world that is open, communication is global, and we are seeing the strength of not just of women who are here but all over the world. Especially in times of crisis like now. And the women in the forefront are kumbaga proving that we are strong,” she explained.
