“Giving equal rights to the LGBTQIA+ community does not mean fewer rights for others,” tweeted celebrity impersonator KaladKaren last November 9, 2022.
This comment was her clear response to House Bill 5717 or “The Heterosexual Act of 2022” recently filed by Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. of Manila’s 6th District. This bill aims to “recognize, define, and protect the rights of heterosexuals”.
The Drag Race Philippines Season 1 judge had to voice out her thoughts on the matter.
“It’s not a pie,” argued KaladKaren. “How can they grant this ‘Heterosexual Act’ when heteros aren’t really oppressed?”
Rep. Abante, in his explanatory note, justified his refiling of the said bill.
“Any gender, gender identity or gender expression outside of God’s creation is man’s choice and creation,” he stated. “If we allow these [bills] to become a law, these groups of precious souls will be driven away and away from God until they are gone too far that they could no longer recognize Him or hear His call.”
“The best was to avoid a ‘perceived’ discrimination so to be what God created us to be,” he added.
Rep. Abante also urged the passing of HB 5717 to be just, equal, and fair to heterosexuals.
“If, therefore, we seek to ‘grant’ and/or ‘protect’ rights to homosexuals, bisexuals, transgenders and queers, in the spirit of justice, equity and fair plat, we must also ‘grant’ and/or ‘protect’ rights to heterosexuals who are the actual and direct creations of God,” he argued.
KaladKaren shared this excerpt on Twitter and did not hold back in her response.
“Naloka ako sa ‘actual and direct creations of God,’” she reacted in disbelief. “Husay… sabi ni God. Charot!”
KaladKaren shuttles between London and Manila, and has been a strong advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community. Her real name is Jervi Ryan Li, but is professionally known as KaladKaren, the name she uses when she impersonates news anchor Karen Davila. A Filipina trans woman, she proudly owns her identity and has successfully navigated a decade-long relationship with British fiancé Luke Wrightson.
An active social media personality, KaladKaren aims to inspire and entertain her fans through her content. She recently was awarded YouTube’s Silver Play Button Award, signifying that her channel has already gained 100,000 subscribers. She was also chosen to be the cover model of a drag magazine.
“KaladKaren has metamorphosed into the stellar artist and compelling figure that she is today. With her huge strides into bigger platforms, KaladKaren aims to give the drag and queer community a safer space to thrive and survive,” said Mega Drag magazine of KaladKaren.
KaladKaren is not one to hod back her punches when it comes to the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Her sentiments were backed up by LGBTQIA+ rights advocacy group Bahaghari. Its chairperson Reyna Valmores pointed out that the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sex Characteristics Bill or SOGIESC Bill isn’t only for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Rather, it seeks equality for all, “regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, by uplifting those who are too often discriminated against.”
