“I think I’m still rediscovering myself as an artist,” admits Heart Evangelista in her latest vlog.
One of the many hats that Heart proudly wears is that of an artist. She has actually had quite a career out of it, with her paintings selling from PHP 200,000 up. Her hand-painted bags, for instance, sell for at least that price. She is known for painting original, limited edition artworks on designer bags Hermes and Louis Vuitton.
Heart shared that she finds herself painting whenever she is in Manila.
“This is where you will find the core of my heart,” she explains.
She looked back at how she began and revealed that she has always been interested in painting. Like many children, she started drawing and painting on the walls of their house.
“I was very, very young,” she recalls. “My mom would be so angry with me, but my dad would say ‘Hayaan mo siya!”
She also used to trace the images of women on the covers of Vogue magazine, which she thinks could have led to her muses being women.
Heart named Paul Klee, Frida Kahlo, Matisse, and Gustav Klimt as some of the artists that influence and inspire her work. As she continues to grow as an artist, though, she also realizes that she didn’t want to limit herself.
“As life developed and all of that, you start to realize that there are just so many things you need to do, so many rules you need to follow, so many things that you cannot do that you just want to do freestyle,” Heart explains.
While she used to sketch, Heart found that to be a bit restrictive.
“It’s all about coloring within the lines or not beyond the lines,” she reasons.
Heart found some sense of freedom in just going with the flow and allowing herself to give in to her inner artist.
“It’s so liberating to just do freestyle and so whatever you want,” she says.
Heart said she finds herself guided by her emotions, whatever they may be.
“Basically, my inspiration these days would be random emotions. Depression, anxiety, happiness, fear, sadness,” Heart reveals. “And I think there’s something really beautiful about melancholic moments.”
Music is also a motivator for Heart.
“As an artist or as an actor, in a sense, I like to use music to kind of motivate me and to tap certain emotions that I have. And that’s how I begin,” shares Heart. “Music, the right song, and then it just happens. It’s like pressing a button.”
Heart admitted that her paintings depict her current state of mind, and would change as her emotions do. She is determined to embrace every aspect of who she is and opens herself to what life has in store for her.
