Having first worked with teen love team SethDrea (composed of Seth Fedelin and Andrea Brillantes) on the digital film Wild Little Love in 2019, director Dolly Dulu revealed her secret to breaking the ice whenever she is working with new stars. In her latest iQiyi series Saying Goodbye, direk Dolly also works with love team KoDrea (newcomers Kobie Brown and Andi Abaya) for the very first time.

“Chini-chismis ko sila (laughs). I always begin by asking them about yung mga kuwento nila sa buhay, yung mga kuwento ng love life nila, yung mga kuwento nila sa pag-ibig nila para at least meron kaming common ground sa kung saan kami mag-sa-start off. At saka ako rin nag-kukuwento ako about myself sa kanila para ma-feel ng mga katrabaho ko na we’re all just human and we’re all just working and gusto lang namin magpasaya. Ganun yung starting point ko lagi. Chismisan muna before kami mag-actual scene breakdown,” she explained.

Not one to sugarcoat her experience with the Saying Goodbye lock-in taping bubble, direk Dolly revealed it was not always easy.

“Well hindi ko naman sasabihin na it was easy kasi hindi naman naging madali. Kasi expected naman yun sa akin na nun na merong tatlong bagong artista na papasok (referring to KoDrea and Nio Tria), parang minindset ko na yung sarili ko na it was going to be a challenge and masaya ako kasi nalagpasan namin yung challenge. Sobrang nakakatuwa yung nag-step up doon sa game. Ang goal kasi namin nitong tatlong bago is for people not to say, ‘Uy, bakit ganun yung arte nila?’ Tapos gagawin nilang excuse yung bago sila. Ang goal namin was to make people say na ‘Uy ang galing nila kahit bago sila’ and feeling ko na-achieve namin yung ganung goal kasi very open yung tatlo sa lahat ng sinasabi ko, sa lahat ng sinasabi ng mga matatandang artista sa kanila and pati yung mga advice na binibigay ng SethDrea sa kanila. They were very open to trying to absorb it as much as they could, given na konti lang din yung preparations namin,” she recalled.

Direk Dolly also revealed how she liked the attitude that the Saying Goodbye cast brought to the set every day.

“Yun yung magandang katrabaho, yung walang attitude. Kumbaga hindi nila sinasabi sa sarili nila na magaling sila, parang open sila na gumaling pa. I think ganun dapat yung pananaw ng mga bagong artista na hindi mo dapat sabihin na magaling ka na, dapat kailangan lagi mong sinasabi gagaling pa ako at ganun sila. At naging successful kami doon sa pagpapakita at pagpapaplabas ng mga abilities nila as actors. Pero hindi naging madali pero kinaya naman (laughs),” she explained.

After working with former PBB teen housemates-turned-Squad Plus members Kobie and Andi, direk Dolly shared why she has high hopes for their love team.

“Siguro for Kodrea very clear yung chemistry ng dalawa, it’s very natural. Minaximize namin sa series yung napakanatural na chemistry nila. Kasi nakakakilig talaga off screen pag kausap mo lang silang dalawa. And I think yun yung magdadala sa kanila sa future pa, yung very natural na chemistry na kahit walang nakatutok na camera sa kanila eh nararamdaman mo siya. Puwede siya bangkuhan kasi we’re always open for that kind of chemistry,” she said.

Another up and coming actor direk Dolly also guided on the Saying Goodbye set was veteran actress Cherry Pie Picache’s only son Nio Tria who also joined the Star Magic family last year.

“Very versatile kasi si Nio kasi yung personality niya very different talaga sa character niya sa Saying Goodbye. And maganda kasi nagawa niya so it talks about yung range na puwede niya maabot kapag nahasa pa siya and kaya niya lumabas sa shell na meron siya ngayon. In general, I think these actors are very open talaga to suggestions and very frank din naman ako pag hindi nila nakukuha yung gusto namin sa production and hindi din naman nila dinadamdam kasi hindi naman sila nagalit sa akin kahit paulit ulit kami, maraming takes kami. Actually nagpapasalamat din ako kina Seth at Andrea kasi very patient sila when it comes to being in the same scenes with these actors. Kasi madami kaming retakes kasi ayaw namin mag-settle at alam nung tatlo yan. Parang we really did not want to settle with mediocrity when it comes to performance,” she added.

Saying Goodbye is now exclusively available on iQiyi and www.iQ.com.
