Gary Valenciano feels thankful for the gift of life.

In an episode of Toni Gonzaga’s Toni Talks, the Kapamilya singer opened up about the numerous times he battled with serious health conditions throughout his life including his most recent ones: getting heart surgery and being diagnosed with kidney cancer a month later.

He then recalled an unforgettable moment in his life: the time his doctor told him he would only live for 30 more years from the time he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

At that time, Gary was only 14 which meant the doctor was predicting that he would die at the age of 44.

“When I was diagnosed when I was 14 years old, the doctor told my mother, ‘Mrs. Valenciano, a type 1 diabetic is given an average lifespan of 30 years from the day of diagnosis.’ I was 14. So if you do the math, I should’ve died at around 44. Or maybe I got to 48, but with eyesight problems nerve endings, and all,” Gary said.

Now 57, Gary said he doesn’t feel ashamed to talk about his age, saying he isn’t “living on borrowed time.”

“I’m not ashamed to tell people how old I am because I’m not living on borrowed time. I’m living on His time,” Gary added.

Despite everything he had gone through, the country’s pride — dubbed as Mr. Pure Energy — couldn’t be more grateful for the life given to him. “It’s just that I’m thankful for the life I have today,” Gary said.
