It’s been almost two decades since Mikey Bustos first came into the limelight after joining the singing competition Canadian Idol in his hometown in Toronto. The multi-talented social media star looked back on that unforgettable moment in his life in his latest online post.

In the short clip, a 21-year-old Mikey impressed the judges with his acapella version of Lionel Ritchie’s hit song “Hello.” “My dream is to break the Asian barrier in the music industry in North America. And this just got me so much closer. Canadian Idol I love you!” he told the judges after thanking them. Mikey ended up as a runner-up to Ryan Malcolm during the show’s 2003 season.

In his post, the 40-year-old singer and longtime YouTuber wrote, “Everyone starts somewhere. This audition was life-changing and was the day I first realized that with hard work, preparation, ambition, and a little bit of luck, dreams can become real. I ended up placing 8th in the top finals that year, among over 20,000 auditioners in Canada. Singing will always be my first love and I am grateful to the show for allowing me to showcase that love for the millions of Canadians who tuned in to watch. 🎙🇨🇦 #CanadianIdol”
