Filipina Broadway star and actress Lea Salonga has joined the cast of the upcoming U.S. television series Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.
The show is a modern reboot of the hit 2010 series Pretty Little Liars and is the fourth in the Pretty Little Liars franchise. It is helmed by Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also co-wrote the series with his Chilling Adventures of Sabrina collaborator Lindsay Calhoon Bring.
In a statement, producer HBO Max described Original Sin as a “dark, coming-of-rage, horror-tinged drama” that will take place “miles away from Rosewood, but within the existing Pretty Little Liars universe — in a brand-new town, with a new generation of Little Liars.”
The logline reads: “Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a group of disparate teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago… as well as their own.”
As reported by Deadline, Lea will take on the role of Elodie, the mother of Minnie, who is the youngest of the Little Liars. Her character is described as "a bit overbearing", as "Elodie works overtime to keep her daughter safe following a trauma that occurred when Minnie was just a little girl."
Lea is set to star alongside Sharon Leal, Elena Goode, Carly Pope, and Zakiya Young, who will all play mother roles. They will appear opposite lead stars Chandler Kinney, Maia Reficco, Bailee Madison, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Alex Aiono, Mallory Bechtel, and Eric Johnson.
On Instagram on Tuesday, September 28, Lea shared the exciting news with her fans and followers, saying she is excited to be part of the cast of Original Sin.
"The moms have descended upon the town of Millwood! And we have secrets and lies of our own (can’t let the children have all the fun)! So excited to be part of the cast of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin!" said the Broadway star.
Original Sin comes three years after the original Pretty Little Liars wrapped its seven-season run. The show is based on the novel series of the same name by author Sara Shepard, and starred Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Sasha Pieterse, and Filipino-American actress Shay Mitchell. The hit drama spawned two spinoffs, namely, Pretty Little Liars: Ravenswood in 2014 and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists in 2019, but both only lasted a single season.
A release date for Original Sin wasn't announced, but filming for the series already began in upstate New York last August, according to Just Jared Jr. The new episodes will premiere on HBO Max.
