Even though he was already running several successful businesses in the restaurant industry before the pandemic, actor Marvin Agustin said there were still a lot of challenges for him last year when he decided to start new food ventures while doing home quarantine.
“Ang laking changes. And because of that I was able to learn quickly and able to adapt on the cloud kitchen business model that anywhere, wherever you are, as long as you have a kalan at puwede ka makapagluto, puwede ka makapagtinda. So yun yung kinapitan kong business model which is why I was able to create my own cloud kitchen brand which is Secret Kitchen and then from there nag-create na ako ng iba’t ibang brands that I think people would enjoy and products that I think they would love. Yung mga paborito kong pagkain dito sa bahay tinitinda ko na. Good thing natutunan ko agad yung operations na yun and was able to start a new team so I’d be able to champion this new business model which is cloud kitchen.
“Still it’s a never ending challenge, it’s a never ending learning experience. Parang ngayon, magbubukas ulit yung dine in, biglang magsasara. Tapos mag-pe-prepare kami tapos tataas na naman yung cases. Bagong bago yung mga challenges na hinaharap natin but then again kailangan natin siyang harapin with caution and with the right perspective,” he shares during Maxicare’s #GrowthStartsWithCare campaign launch held earlier this month.
Sharing his favorite quote from US entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, Marvin stressed the importance of building a good work team in order to make his business more successful.
“For you to be able to have a successful venture, [an] idea is very important. [An] Idea would spark a new beginning to your life and to a business venture. But [an] idea is only one percent. 99% is execution. Hindi kaya ng isang tao, hindi kaya ng dalawa, hindi kaya ng lima, marami ang taong involved. Imagine sa isang dish na lang, ang daming nangyayari diyan. Bibili ka ng ingredients, pag-dineliver yun i-che-check mo kung maganda yung mga produce na dumating sa ‘yo tapos lulutuin tapos ii-se-serve, i-pa-pack. Ang daming nangyayari so teamwork is very important. It’s your employees, your staff, the members of your organization.
“And I think it as important kasi kung hindi na-fi-feel ng tao na masaya siya, hindi nararamdaman nung empleyado mo o nung staff that they belong in your organization or that they feel valued, they feel respected, they feel heard, I don’t think they’re be able to succeed and execute the vision that you have. Napaka-importanteng pinaparamdam natin lagi sa mga tao natin how important they are in the big picture in all the details that they’ll be doing for your business,” he explained.
During the event, Marvin revealed that aside from employing new people, he also decided to get them healthcare plans.
“I’ll be honest, before this partnership with Maxicare kahit ako natatakot ako kasi parang extra gastos. It’s something na sana hindi ako magkasakit para hindi ako ma-burden financially. Of course ayaw mong magkaroon ka ng sakit sa sarili mo. I know na very intimidating pag sinabi mong HMO. Baka hindi mag-fit sa budget. Ang daming baka (laughs). Pero ang dami nilang affordable plans. Hindi kailangan ma-intimidate, hindi kailangan matakot because it’s kind of this investment. It’s very, very important for our peace of mind.
“And you’re not just getting it for health’s sake but also for the financial impact pag nagkasakit. Itong plans it’s not just actually protection for us pag nagkasakit tayo, it’s also protection from financial impact pag nagkasakit ka. Kasi ang gastos gastos magpa-ospital, magpagamot at di ba sabi nila pag nagkasakit pang-mayaman lang yan. Pero if you have a plan like this, you don’t need to worry about kung magkano gagastusin mo or kung meron ka mang protection na kailngang gawin pag nagkasakit ka,” he said.
