OPM singer and songwriter Rico Blanco was handpicked by ABS-CBN Music’s Creative Director Jonathan Manalo to create an updated version of the iconic theme of Pinoy Big Brother just in time for auditions for the latest season.
“It’s such an honor to do that song. For me, just what it stands for, it’s just so well loved and I had to check muna kung anong maibibigay ko. There’s nothing wrong with the original but he asked me to interpret it so I put all these small elements that you hear from my songs all this time from ‘Awit ng Kabataan’ to there’s a little bit of ‘Yugto’, there’s a little bit of that song and this song and I kind of tried to put everything in this song. So nung nabuo na yung idea sa head ko, umoo na ako kay Jonathan, hindi ko alam na yung deadline pala ay mapapaaga. Yung parang dapat next year pa, actually next week na eh (laughs) so napaaga,” he admitted during the Pinoy tayo mediacon last September 14.
After performing his version of the theme song for the first time on ASAP along with various PBB alumni earlier this month, Rico said he can’t wait for the public to appreciate his latest work.
“I think excited ako about the happiness na mabibigay. It’s a very bright, upbeat song. I kept that from the original version. I wanted it to be the same because I remember all the times that I heard it through the years and how people reacted to it. I remember being in a football game and people jumping up and down nung pinatugtog. Kami kasing artist ito yung tulong na kaya naming maging effective talagang mga ganitong panahon. So ito yung maliit na contribution ko,” he said.

Before agreeing to do the song, Rico said he had a lot of research to do on it first.
“Sa totoo lang, ngayon ko pa lang ata pag-iisipan kasi I was just really excited nung inimbitahan ako ni Jonathan (Manalo) maging part ng kanyang anniversary project. Unang una he’s such a good friend and really very prolific fellow songwriter so support ako agad. Support ako pero sabi ko, ‘Jonathan teka lang pag-aaralan ko yung kanta.’ Kasi parang excited ako pero alam ko na it’s a very valued composition. So iniisip ko paano ko ba ito gagawing akin and at the same time ma-preserve ko yung essence niya. So dun ako nakatutok the whole time and sa excitement ko, sa thrill ko nung pini-perform ko na na part na ako ng story ng song na ‘to,” he said.
Rico Blanco’s single “Pinoy Tayo” was released last September 5 on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, YouTube, and in all digital streaming platforms worldwide.
