As a former judge on Tawag ng Tanghalan, It’s Showtime host Karylle said she has developed a certain affection and support for talented contestants especially former grand winners like Janine Berdin and JM Yosures.
“First time na mag-ko-cross over ako. Hindi ako ma-ju-judge this time. I’m just very proud of all our batches, all our winners, all our singers. So I always try to make it a point to support everyone. I try to check up on them. I actually have this one project with the TNT All-Stars for one of our Magpasikat because I just love them all so much. Dun ko talaga sila naka-bonding nung naka-groupmate ko sila sa Magpasikat. So my responsibility as a host is to tell you na meron silang mga kanta like ‘Pabuhat,’ ‘Side Character.’ Janine (Berdin) is an amazing singer and songwriter. Si JM (Yosures) abangan niyo malapit na rin yan. And parang siguro yun na lang ambag ko sa kanila, to make sure that someone is there constantly pushing and cheering them on as their ate for life,” she said.
As finalists Reiven Umali, Froilan Cedilla, Psalm Manalo, Gem Christian, Adrian Manibale, Anthony Castillo, Lorraine Galvez and Aixia Mallary battle it out in the TNT grand finals this coming Saturday, September 18, Karylle shared what she has noticed with the current batch of contestants.
“At a certain point this season nag-judge din ako and I think yung pinaka na-observe ko lang yung iba talagang singing like there’s no tomorrow, yung sabik. So iba din yung timpla. Yung iba natakot sila dati.
Pero ngayon parang napapaisip tayo, pinagninilaynilayan natin kung ano nga ba ang gusto ko ma-achieve sa buhay ko? So a lot of them are actually becoming brave. So I think yun din ang nagiging surprise sa sarili nila. Yung mga parang they put their dreams on hold for so long, ngayon parang nagkaroon sila ng panibagong lakas. So maybe they never thought they would actually audition and go to compete. Pero nagkaroon sila ng awakening of some sort.
So yun yung talagang tumatak sa akin. Meron pala itong nagagawang push sa mga tao,” she said.
During the Tawag ng Tanghalan: Ang Huling Tapatan mediacon last September 13, Karylle revealed what can make a TNT contestant stand out and give them an advantage in the grand finals.
“Iba yung tapang siguro at saka yung gigil. Kasi yun yun eh. Can you imagine singing in front of your phone for months and months and missing that energy? In our family, we always talk about it. (Her husband) Yael (Yuzon) for example misses doing gigs so much and I would imagine if he were to go back on stage talaga with a big audience, it would be like that. So I guess it’s the same for these contestants, the contenders, the finalists. Yung parang imagine, out of everyone, ikaw lang sa Pilipinas ang makaka-perform sa isang magandang studio, using great mics, and mapapanuod ka sa buong mundo. That is a big deal and everyone wishes for that right now. Na-miss nating lahat yan. Kumbaga na-take for granted ba yan or pangarap na naisang tabi for so long? So parang may something different din. There’s that extra sparkle sa mata nila.
Kaya minsan pag wala yun, alam mo dito ka natalo kahit meron kang ganda ng boses, pero wala yung gigil na yun. Siguro yun yung nagiging edge nung meron nun,” she explains.
