With Tawag ng Tanghalan all set to hold their grand finals this coming Saturday, September 18, celebrity judges Nyoy Volante, Jed Madela, and Louie Ocampo share their excitement in witnessing the upcoming performances from finalists Reiven Umali, Froilan Cedilla, Psalm Manalo, Gem Christian, Adrian Manibale, Anthony Castillo, Lorraine Galvez, and Aixia Mallary this year.

During the recent Tawag ng Tanghalan: Ang Huling Tapatan mediacon, the three hurados shared their true feelings about having to judge some of the country’s most talented performers.

According to Jed Madela, “Hindi siya madaling trabaho. Sa audition process nasala lahat ng magagaling and it’s true that we are given this huge responsibility but ang dami ding factors na kailangan i-consider. Of course, every season kailangan mag-level up yung mga requirements namin as hurados to discover the talent kasi siyempre we want to see something different, we want to see someone better from the previous although lahat ng mga champions natin they are amazing in all of their styles and all their genres. But of course in every season kailangan mag-level up so yun yung load and responsibility sa amin. What will the champion’s offer for this season?”

For hurado Nyoy Volante, he said their judging process is more complicated than what people see onscreen. “Kasi what a lot of people are missing is it’s more than just saying, ‘Okay itong singer na ‘to. Itong singer na ‘to mas okay sa kanya.’ It’s more than that eh kasi you have to understand iba iba yung skill sets namin as musicians, as singers, so iba iba rin yung perceptions namin kung ano yung maganda, ano yung magaling. And we are burdened to a certain extent with the responsibility of being correct. Kasi walang correct eh. It’s a matter of taste. But one thing’s for sure, iisa kami in the goal na lahat ng mga inputs namin sama sama.

“Kaya nga mapapansin niyo na kapag ang naglalaban laban sobrang galing pareho, nakatayo na kami nun, nag-uusap na kami. May group chat pa kami sa Viber. Kasi it’s not easy. Kaya lalong lalo na kung yung sinasabi na parehong magaling yung naglalaban. Kasi definitely, kung ikaw masusunod, wala namang matatanggal dun sa dalawa eh. Pareho silang ma-re-retain kasi sobrang galing nila. But yun yung rules ng Tawag ng Tanghalan kailangan may manalo.

“Minsan gusto talaga namin maiyak kasi sana hindi na lang ganun yung rules. But at the end of the day that’s what we have to do. It’s very, very hard just because meron kang responsibility na kailangang gawin pero as a matter of taste, lahat sila acceptable kasi halos walang pumapasok sa TnT na hindi magaling eh. Lahat sila magaling,” he explained.

For acclaimed composer and hurado Louie Ocampo, being a judge is a welcome responsibility. “I must admit it is difficult but it’s a very [good] problem given to us. Why? Because we enjoy listening to everyone. They’re all very talented. They have high skills in their craft so it’s such a good problem and responsibility that we have to take in judging all of them.

“So having said that, enjoy eh. It’s a very good task. It’s a very good thing that we have to handle for them. I personally enjoy it because they are all so talented and at the end of the day, it’s so difficult to choose. And when we say na ang gagaling nilang lahat, hindi yun plastic. Talagang magagaling silang lahat. It’s a good problem and I can do this for the rest of my life. Sana ganyan ang lahat ng problema (laughs),” he said.
