Gretchen Ho shared a close-up look at the Olympic gold medal that weightlifting champion Hidilyn Diaz won at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
"Take a look at the first ever gold medal for the Philippines. Hidilyn was generous enough to invite us to hold her gold medal and take photos with it. Really feels like destiny, somehow. Thank you, @hidilyndiaz," Gretchen posted on Instagram.
Gretechen is currently in Tokyo as a reporter covering the Olympics. She also had the opportunity to interview Hidilyn after her win.
In the interview, Gretchen asked the weightlifting champion how she felt winning the first gold medal of the Philippines at the Olympics.
Hidilyn responded, "Hindi ako makapaniwala. Nasorpresa ako na nagawa ko 'yun. Kakaiba si God. Sa lahat ng prayer warriors ko diyan sa Pilipinas, thank you so much. At sa team HD at sa lahat ng sumuporta sa akin, thank you so much for believing in me."
When asked by Gretchen what is her message for the all the Filipino, Hidilyn said, "Huwag kayong sumuko kahit anong challenges at trial 'yan. Manalangin tayo kay God [na] mag-ga-guide siya sa atin. Proud to be Pinoy!"
Hidilyn won the Olympic gold medal in the women's 55kg weightlifting competition.
She also set a new Olympic record in the clean and jerk category and in her overall total.
