In the new digital film My Amanda, Piolo Pascual said playing the role of Alessandra de Rossi’s best friend onscreen was a natural transition for since he is actually good friends with her in real life.
“I learned from this film. As long as there’s love, you can move mountains and you’ll go from there. I also know for a fact that it is possible to actually have girl best friends that you treat like one of the guys and being around Alessandra, it was easy for me because that’s how we are in real life. So it wasn’t hard for me to get into the character because we were literally developing the chemistry and we didn’t realize that there was chemistry because we were doing a lot of things on the side,” he explained.
As one of the founders of Spring Films which produced the film, Piolo shared his reaction when Alessandra first told him about her story idea.
“It was not hard for me to say yes when she pitched it because first of all, she said, ‘I want to give you a gift.’ She made through with her promise. She said it during Kita Kita. Sabi niya, ‘I have a gift for you and I hope you like it.’
“So when she pitched it I didn’t think twice because I know it’s a good film and a good story to tell. And as a producer, it’s always risky to produce. But once you believe in the idea, you go all in. You dive head first. So did her sister and her brother-in-law. So we were all in right away. And there was no turning back once we all said yes to it.”
With shooting for the film starting even before the pandemic, Piolo said it was an advantage for them to have more time for post-production work before Netflix picked up the film for global release.
“Actually it took us more time to do post production than principal photography which gave us more time to actually do it right. It was a blessing that we had time to edit it properly. Good thing we waited. Good thing we took our time. Because that’s how films should be done. In this time and age, you have one baby, you have this film, you have this great idea, do it right. Take your time. And Netflix gave us that time to just make it right so that it’s tastefully done and hopefully people will like it,” he explained.
Earlier this year, Piolo also launched his new record label Just Music which aims to give a platform to potential artists in the country. Now that he has branched out of acting, Piolo shared his goal for supporting local films and music.
“Personally, I’d always wanted to showcase Filipino movies to the international market. We go to festivals to sell our films, we spend so much and we don’t get distributed and yet Netflix took a risk getting our film and launching it globally. I feel like we have a voice and that voice needs to be heard globally as Filipino filmmakers. I’m glad they gave us this chance and I hope it would open more doors to Filipino filmmakers to do it in a global perspective,” he added.
My Amanda is now available for streaming on Netflix.
