As the director behind blockbuster films like One More Chance, A Very Special Love, and You Changed My Life, Cathy Garcia-Molina has already worked with some of the country’s top love caliber actors like John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo as well as love teams like Kathniel and Lizquen.

In her first Star Cinema project this year Love at First Stream, she works with the newer batch of Star magic talents like Daniela Stranner, Kaori Oinuma, Anthony Jennings, and Rhys Miguel. The kapamilya director admitted there is more pressure on her when directing more established stars.

“Mas pressured pag mga datihang artista na. Hanggang ngayon parang may feeling ako na ako bago pa din. So every time I work with the celebrities na kilala na, parang feeling ko baka ako tanungin, ‘Bakit mo ako pinapa-take two?’ (laughs). Mas nandun ang pressure kasi yun may level of expectations.

“What’s good about new ones like these four, hindi pa alam ng tao kung anong kayang ibigay ng mga ’to. So andito pa kami para ipakita kung ano ang kaya nilang ibigay. So mas walang expectations. Pag na-surpass namin eh di very good kami,” she explained.

After doing virtual acting workshops with her Love at First Stream cast members, direk Cathy said she believes in their potential for being good actors.

“It’s not for me to say kung sila ang next Kathniel or Lizquen kasi hindi naman ako ang manunuod. The viewers, sila talaga ang maglalagay sa kanila doon. But I always say this, I still believe they will have their own kumbaga, brand and that’s really up to them.

“Kung naniniwala ako, yes naniniwala ako na these kids have what it takes to perform well. Sa akin kasi yun muna. Parang bonus na lang kung maging sikat na love team sila. Ang sa akin ngayon, maging magaling na artista muna. Maging worthy of that shot na binigay ng Star Cinema sa kanila. After that, if they would want to go on with the love team or kung saan man sila dalhin, at least meron na silang base na kaya nila pala and magkaroon sila ng confidence sa sarili. Yun muna ako ngayon,” she shared.

As for her intimidating reputation on the set of her previous films, direk Cathy said it’s a good thing that her four lead stars are afraid of disappointing her.

“Good thing yun kasi alam nila pinapasok nila. Ang hirap kung dumating sila sa set na akala nila mabait ako. Aba aba (laughs).

“I think the fear is coming from not being able to deliver. Hindi sila natatakot dahil I’m a monster lang. Alam naman nila. I have seen them and done two days of workshop with them. So alam naman nila ang monstrous side ko only comes out when they don’t listen and the monstrous side of me also comes out to bring out the best in them. So the fear comes out hindi lang sana dahil takot lang sa akin basta. Kasi kung yun, babye na lang sa inyo.

“Pero if the fear is in the ability to perform, okay yun kasi mas gusto ko ang batang tinatanggap ang kanyang kakulangan kesa ang taong mayabang at sasabihing magaling na siya. Kasi kung hindi resign na lang ako, i-direct niya self niya,” she explained.

With almost two decades of directing under her belt, direk Cathy said she understands the importance of mentoring the newer generation of actors in the industry.

“Because I was once a newbie and I was once young and I had my mentors who trusted me. Therefore you have me as who I am now. If not for those who trusted me, wala din ako dito. So it’s my turn to give back my trust and a chance to the new ones to be one day, the big stars of Philippine cinema,” she said.

Love At First Stream stars Kaori Oinuma, Rhys Miguel, Daniela Stranner, and Anthony Jennings and is set to be released later this year.
