Director Don Cuaresma pays homage to ‘90s sitcom ‘Palibhasa Lalake’ in his latest comedy

After directing numerous ABS-CBN series like Dyesebel, It Might Be You, 100 Days to Heaven, and Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay among others, Don Cuaresma has made a name for himself as director both in TV and film. This year, he takes the helm of a new sitcom called GVBOYS: Pangmalakasang Good Vibes.

“Mostly ang mga nagawa ko naman teleseryes sa ABS-CBN pero I’ve done comedy movies. Pero ito it’s something new to me kasi parang kung matatandaan dati natin in the ‘90s to 2000, ang ABS-CBN araw-araw halos from Monday to Saturday ang palabas niyan puro sitcoms. So nawala yung sitcom. So ito yung nag-inspire sa amin na ibalik naman especially ngayong pandemic. Hindi ba sinasabi nila na cliche na yung ‘Laughter is the best medicine,’ ito yung best medicine to cope with the pandemic eh, kung ano yung nangyayari,” he said.

The veteran director, who is also the writer and director of the show, said the project is his homage to classic Pinoy sitcoms.

“GV Boys is a story about three male boarders na nakatira sila kina Aling Pearly. Ang pamilya kasi is not only formed by bloodline eh. It is formed by affinity. So kung paano yung friendship nag-evolve sa pagiging pamilya, ito yung storya ng GV Boys.

“Actually this is inspired by Palibhasa Lalake and all the ‘90s sitcoms. Ang silver lining kasi ng pag-te-taping dito sa pandemic is naka-lock-in kami so we have more time to know each other. And we have more time to discuss the script. Nandun lang kami sa isang location eh. So we wake up every morning, sabay kami nag-be-breakfast, lunch, hanggang dinner. So ang nangyayari nagkakaroon ng bonding yung mga cast.

“I always believe na kapag masaya yung show, nata-translate yun sa screen. Tawa kami ng tawa, kain kami ng kain sa set, ganun din yung lalabas sa screen. Nag-ta-translate talaga yung saya at saka yung tawanan namin sa screen,” he shared.

Direk Don handpicked his three lead actors Jerome Ponce, Nikko Natividad, and Dave Bornea.

“Yung tatlong actors na yan pinili namin in cooperation with Puregold. Kami nag-decide and we wanted which three actors had the best chemistry. Importante ang chemistry sa lock-in taping. It’s either you have chemistry or you don’t. So sabi ko bago tayo pumasok sa lock-in taping I wanted a chemistry test na live yung tatlo. So we had a camera test and luckily naman naging effective yung kanilang chemistry kaya ang saya saya nung shoot,” he said.

Following in the tradition of Palibhasa Lalake which starred Richard Gomez and Joey Marquez, GVBOYS will also have characters talking directly to the camera and addressing the viewers.

“Actually it’s only inspired by Palibhasa Lalake yung merong tatlong boarders at meron isang boarding house. But the rest kami na yun. And it’s been done in other places not just Palibhasa Lalake, it’s the breaking of the fourth wall. May fourth wall kaming bini-break and nakikipag-usap sa TV audience yung mga characters. So yun yung medyo Palibhasa Lalake na element. Tapos yung mga seksi na babae ito naman yung Chika Chika Chicks and Chicks to Chicks. Actually it’s a homage to the ‘90s sitcoms which we can consider the golden age of sitcoms,” he said.
