Kean Cipriano releases his first solo album ‘Childlike’: ‘Super proud ako dito’

After more than 15 years of being the frontman of his band Callalily, singer Kean Cipriano was proud to launch his first solo album Childlike last May 14 under his record label OC Records. The 33-year-old artist admitted the project was actually three years in the making.

Dahil nasa back end ako nung music ngayon so yung enegry ko rin napupunta sa iba’t ibang artist which is super challenging for me as an artist dahil parang pagdating dun sa sarili mong gawa pagod ka na,” he shared during the Childlike album listening party event last May 12.

Despite the long wait, Kean believed the timing of the album’s release is still right even during a pandemic.

So ibibigay namin dun and then may mga artists na dumating then nag-release then ang ganda na naman ng momentum so ibigay na natin sa kanila. That’s what the music business is all about.

Having composed six out of the nine tracks in the Childlike album, Kean says the album is like starting out as a new artist. “Parang nagsisimula ako ulit ng career ngayon eh from scratch with this solo effort. So yun yung lumabas na album title. So ito yung album na bata ako ulit talaga,” he admits.

Kean is proud of having total creative control with his first solo effort. Parang kasi nga dahil nasa isang mundo ako, you know the business side of music na you have to listen to your management, makikipagkita ka halfway sa kanila. Pati yung branding, imaging , and all that. So kailangan ko rin mag-submit sa mga ginawa ko nung time na yun. Pero now that I have my own record label, sabi ko bakit hindi ko i-release yung mga gusto ko talaga?

To be honest, whenever I hear the songs that we made before, especially the hit songs na nagawa namin, may feeling ako na-nag-ki-cringe ako. It’s not that I don’t like it. I loved them. Kumbaga it changed my life ng todo yung mga kanta na yun. Pero alam ko rin kasi nung mga time na yun ay kailangan ko mag-compromise and siyempre nasa stage ako nun na bata ako at siyempre banda eh, kailangan niyo mag-compliment sa isa’t isa yung decision making niyo dapat lahat kayo with the entities na nakaakibat sa inyo,” he said.

Having produced the album himself, Kean said it was a challenge to finish Childlike while the country was still in lockdown.

Wala kayo sa isang room to create. Madalas doon nangyayari yung magic di ba? So yun yung pinaka challenge niya dahil hindi mo sila nakikita face to face. Yung ibang tracks dito na-record na prior to the pandemic.
