Some beauty products can be tempting — especially if you see influencers or even big-time celebrities using them. And sometimes, it can be even more tempting when you see them getting sold at low prices. But according to dermatologist-to-the-stars Vicki Belo, one should be wary especially if the items appear too good to be true.

In Julia Barretto’s latest vlog, Dr. Vicki debunked myths on trending beauty tools including the use of crystals and infrared devices on people’s faces. While she agrees on the use of some of these items, Vicki said it is still important to see a doctor to have skin issues checked.

But Vicki, who revealed herself to be among the pioneers of microneedling in the country, admitted she feels guilty about bringing it to the Philippines because of the effects it had on other people’s skin.

“I feel guilty because about 15 years ago, I brought microneedling to the Philippines. It’s just one of the things I brought [to the country]. And I really liked it because it [did] remove acne scars and I had a lot of pimples and scars,” she said.

“But then the needles get blunt or purol after a while so you try to make it harder and it would break blood vessels. So I had a lot of little blood vessels and holes and bumps in my face. Then I realized, it’s a nope,” she added.

But according to Vicki, it’s safe to do microneedling if it’s done in the office of a doctor.

“So microneedling is good if you do it in a doctor’s office because microneedles there are new and then we throw it away after doing it on your face. It also has radio frequency at the tip so that it causes the skin to contract,” she explained.

The famed dermatologist also denied she’s promoting the use of microneedling at home.

“Please don’t buy the rollers. I know there’s a video out there that I made 15 years ago. There are some unscrupulous people who are using — that I’m kunyari daw promoting microneedling today with the thing in the house. First of all, it’s hard. It gets blunt. You might be introducing [bacteria while] making little holes in your face.
