After celebrating International Women’s Day earlier this month, Sunshine Cruz said she makes sure to empower her daughters Angelina, Samantha, and Chesca to be strong, independent women and to teach them how to handle bashers online and in real life.

“Ang challenge ko as a woman, madalas kasi sa social media ang mga kababaihan ngayon medyo nababastos tayo. So parang yun yung isa sa challenge sa akin especially for me. Mahirap for me na nakikita ko ang mga anak ko ay nababastos sa social media. That is why lagi kong sinasabi ilaban niyo. Kung alam ninyong nagkamali ang tao sa inyo, you have to give them a lesson. Kasi huwag tayong mag-bingi bingihin, huwag tayong tatahimik. Kaya yung mga kababaihan na nag-iingay pag nababastos sila, thumbs up ako sa kanila,” she shared.

With her eldest daughter Angelina now also in showbiz, Sunshine said she made sure to give her important advice before accepting her first project.

“Ang advice ko talaga sa kanya is unang una kasi first year college siya ngayon sa La Salle Taft so sabi ko nga as much as possible prioridad mo pa rin ang pag-aaral mo. Iba pa rin kasi yung may pinag-aralan talaga at yung nakakapagtapos. That is why ako nga kahit matanda na ako I tried to finish college talaga eh just to show everyone na wala sa edad yan at napakahalaga ng edukasyon.

“But since gustong gusto rin niya na mag-artista, sabi ko, ‘Anak, unang una sa lahat, you have to practice your Tagalog.’ Kasi talagang naging kumportable sila lahat ng English ang pagsasalita nila. Nakakatuwa naman na I know she’s exerting effort sa kanyang pag-ta-Tagalog and pangalawa, yung talent niya with acting, actually revelation siya for me dito sa TVC ng Silka kasi nung pinaiyak siya ng director, wow talagang ang bilis umiyak nung bata.

“So nakaka-proud talaga na nakikita ko na maybe it’s because nga artista yung mga magulang niya. Yung tatay niya is a very good actor and ako naman umaarte din so I guess nasa dugo din talaga na not just yung love nila for singing but for acting as well. That’s what I always tell them, okay lang na mag-artista kayo, I’ll support you 101% pero huwag na huwag ninyong kakalimutan ang inyong pag-aaral,” she said.

Even when it comes to finances, Sunshine also taught Angelina about the challenges of earning her own money through acting.

“I always tell her na hindi porke’t kumikita ka na eh bibilhin mo na ang mga bagay na kahit hindi mo naman kailangan. It is something na pinapakita ko sa mga anak ko. I’m trying to be a good example to them kasi ang dami ngang nagsasabi sa akin na kuripot ako. Ang sinasabi ko sa mga anak ko, ‘You know what, if my cousins or my relatives tell me that I’m kuripot, you should be thankful. Kasi siyempre nag-pe-prepare si mommy, hindi naman laging may trabaho tayo. Hindi naman laging may opportunity. So mas maganda yung mas malalim yung bulsa natin just in case of emergency or walang trabaho, meron pa ring madudukot si mom.’

“And that’s what I tell them all the time. Na kailangan matuto kayong mag-save. If you earn like 10,000 pesos, yung eight or seven thousand, you keep it in your bank and yung three thousand lang ang gastusin ninyo. Hindi yung hindi pa nga dumadating yung 10,000 ninyo ginastos niyo na. So it is something that I teach them,” she said.
