Starting out as a producer for Star Cinema for more than a decade to blockbuster films like Hello, Love, Goodbye, Love or Money, Barcelona, The Mistress, and Starting Over Again under talented directors like Olivia Lamasan, Cathy Garcia-Molina and Mae Cruz-Alviar, John Leo Garcia said he is thankful for all the experiences that have helped him become the director he is today.
“Actually, blessed din naman ako sa projects kasi I think naging training ko din. Kasi kahit producing siya, working with Inang, direk Cathy, direk Mae, naniwala ako na na-ho-hone din ako sa tulong nila,” he shared during the Love is Color Blind mediacon.
During the press event, direk Leo said that Love is Color Blind was not an easy film to make. But with the cooperation of his lead stars Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano, the end result was worth all their hard work.
“Actually, malaking tulong na I never saw any hesitations kay Donny and Belle. Mahirap siya gawin in terms of acting, lalo na yung characters ni Donny at Belle, pero dahil more than willing sila, even the rest of the cast, sobrang naging madali. Marami akong backers si direk Cathy (Garcia-Molina), si Inang (Olivia Lamasan) and si Carmi (David), and the rest of Star Cinema. So sobrang hirap niya gawin nung papasok pa lang kami, sobrang hirap talaga ng concept lalo na launch ng mga bata pa lang and yung concept na binibigay namin. But, with the help of everyone, sobrang naging madali and na-enjoy din naman namin yung process. So naging enjoyable at madali naman siya,” he explained.
Even though the film is his second time to work with the love team DonBelle, direk Leo said it is a very different storyline from their high school romance series He’s Into Her.
“Actually, nung He’s Into Her, I was able to work with them kasi kinailangan mag-second unit director. Wala lang akong kinuhang kilig scenes with them together pero I managed to get to know them better kahit short period of time. Akala ko nga medyo kilala ko na sila pero dito sa project pagdating sa process sobrang kinikilala ko pa rin sila talaga. I know ang kilig kilig talaga ng He’s Into Her pero sabi ko dito ibang kilig dapat ang ibigay namin kasi this is a different story and different characters for them. Umabot sa point actually na sa sobrang comfortable nila together, I had to sit down with them in the middle of shooting. Ang sabi ko, ‘Parang pare-pareho yung nakikita ko, hindi puwede.’ So sabi ko, ‘Starting tomorrow maghiwalay muna kayo.’ Kasi I think I needed to fire that spark ulit. Silang dalawa willing talaga at saka yung teamwork nila nandun eh. Alam nila na kailangan nila for a love team na maghiwalay. Ginawa naman nila. Eventually naging happy ako kasi nakuha ko yung may binigay ulit na bago yung love team nila,” he admitted.
Direk Leo also shares how satisfied he is with the overall look of the film. “Treatment wise, dahil nga love is color blind, I talked with my director of photography and ganun talaga siya, lalabas na masarap siya sa mata plus may play tayo with colors. So I’m happy na ganun lumalabas, trailer pa lang, kung ano yung na-envision ko ay nandun,” he added.
