As part of the lineup of Salubong: The Christmas Concert this year, spoken word artist Martin Naling is happy to be part of the event along with other performers like the Aegis band, Sponge Cola, and hip-hop artist CLR. According to his official YouTube channel, Martin is a Cavite-based writer, spoken word artist, director, and content creator. He is known by his viral spoken word films and collaborations.

During the Salubong mediacon, the breakthrough spoken word artist admitted he was one of those who was hit hard by unexpected lockdown last year.

“Yung pandemic matindi talaga kasi nung first quarter ng pandemic wala talaga, cancelled gigs, pati yung mga projects. Kasi aside form being a spoken word artist may mga film projects din ako na ginagawa. Naubos talaga lahat. Always leave a mark,” he said.

With spoken word defined as to include “any kind of poetry recited aloud,” Martin said he is very hopeful about the future of the art form becoming more popular int he country in the near future.

The spoken word artist also shares what his advocacy is as a performer that goes beyond creating and performing art. “Naniniwala ako na ang pinakamakapangyarihan na paraan ng pakikipag-communicate is through story. Parang nakikipagkuwentuhan ka lang sa tao. Sa spoken word naman, I’m trying to tell the stories na hindi nabibigyan ng volume. Hindi ko sinasabi na ako yung voice of the voiceless. Yung spoken word, it’s like ako yung nagdadag volume ng mas malakas para mas marinig. Lagi kong sinasabi yun. Kahit ikulong mo man kami sa kahon, which is yung pandemic, ay malaya naman ang aming isip. Hindi kami mapipigilan,” he said.

Next year, Martin also revealed his plans in order to reach a wider audience after performing in Salubong: The Christmas Concert this month.

“I’m planning to create a spoken word album na puwede pakinggan sa Spotify at YouTube. Kasi nga isa yun sa kinagandahan ng spoken word na na-incorporate ko yung music as background music and I also do collaborations. May mga piyesa ako na kung mapapanuod niyo, habang tumutula ako may sumasayaw. May mga piyesa ako na habang tumutula ako there’s someone who’s playing an instrument in the background at meron ding collaboration ng musika at tula. Next year I’m planning to put it sa Spotify,” he added.
