In an interview with Francine Diaz, Jake opened up about being a father to his daughter Ellie.

Jake, who described Ellie as an “active kid,” said he would usually bond with Ellie over books.

“Si Ellie kasi she’s very active eh especially ‘pag nasa Siargao siya. Lagi ‘yang nasa beach or nagba-bike. So, ang gusto kong matutunan niya is ‘yung magbasa ng books. So whenever she’s with me, nahihirapan ako, pinipilit ko siyang magbasa. So, we started with Harry Potter,” he said.

Since Ellie spends most of her time with her mom Andi in Siargao, Jake said he makes the most out of every single moment he gets to spend with his daughter who is about to turn ten this year.

“Kasi ‘yung setup nga namin, I’m not always with her. Most of the time kasama niya ‘yung mommy niya sa Siargao. So, whenever she’s with me, laging memorable kasi sinusulit ko lagi ‘yung pagkakataon. Kaya nga kahit ayaw ko man, I have no choice but i-spoil siya kasi minsan lang kami magkasama,” he said.

Jake also admitted his priorities changed after Ellie came into his life. He then added that he feels fulfilled knowing his child is becoming the person that she is because of him.

“As I said 21 lang ako (at the time he became a father). So ‘yung time na ‘yun parang ang priority ko lumabas, magbarkada, tambay, hangout. So when Ellie came, talagang nagbago ang mundo ko. Hindi na lang sarili ko ‘yung iniisip ko. I have someone to look after, alagaan,” he said.

He went on: “So, I guess ‘yung different joy ‘yung nararamdaman ng isang magulang because habang lumalaki ‘yung anak, nakikita mo ‘yung progress. And alam mong part ka nun. And it’s because of you kaya the person your child is becoming is also somehow because of you. Very fulfilling.”

Meanwhile, Jake also talked about doing a co-parenting setup with Andi, saying it didn’t come easy for both of them.

The Marry Me Marry You star said it took them some time to find the “right balance.”

“Hindi siya madali. And marami na rin kaming pinagdaanan bago kami dumating sa point na ‘to na we found the right balance. Madami kaming pinagdaanan na ups-and-downs na parang roller coaster,” he said.

“Siyempre, when we became parents, twenty-one lang kami pareho. Then siyempre ‘yung pride, ‘yung maturity. So it took a while. Years before kami dumating sa point na ‘to na inuuna na namin ‘yung welfare ni Ellie,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jake was also asked what his reaction would be should someone decide to court his daughter in the future.

“Hindi pa ako ready. Feeling ko mamoroblema na ako diyan in a couple of years,” Jake said.
