As one of the stars of Viral Scandal, Dimples Romana said that their new series mirrors the social issues in society today, especially when it comes to the dark side of social media and the consequences it has on families. In the series, Dimples’s eldest daughter Rica Sicat (played by Charlie Dizon) becomes the victim of an online video which affects her, their family, and the entire community.

“Para sa akin coming from my character and also bilang nanay at may asawa in real life, kapag may pamilya ka kasi na-realize natin na we’re heavily affected by anything that any member of the family will go through. And so lahat ng nasasabi sa isang tao o isang miyembro ng pamilya ay nasasabi sa buong pamilya.

“And I think now more than ever, we know and we have felt ang pros and cons ng ating social media and I think ngayon maganda na mapag-usapan natin at makita natin ano ang epekto pag mailabas ang kahit anong viral, whether it is good or bad, sinong apektado, sinong nasisiyahan, sinong nabibigyan ng benepisyo, at sino rin ang nasasaktan. At gaano katagal nga ba ang epekto nun?

“Kasi madalas sa atin, we just swipe up or we just share or comment. Tapos na para sa mga taong hindi involved. But sa Viral Scandal, we actually dig deep and show exactly how it is like to be in a family kung saan may tina-tackle ng ganitong klase ng issue sa buhay. So both sides, sa mga taong nagbibigay ng opinion at sa mga taong sumasalo ng opinion at panghuhusga,” she explained.

From her own personal experience, Dimples said she has thankfully only gone viral for positive reasons, after her character Daniela Mondragon in the series Kadenang Ginto became the subject of numerous memes online.

“We all know naman yung sa maleta and the red dress and that was something that was quite a surprise to me and funny because even until today parang nakakakita pa rin ako ng mga nag-ta-tag sa akin. Pero kasi yung gusto ko na kind of viral because una hindi siya sakit, pangalawa imbis na malulungkot ka or maiinis ka, parang maaaliw ka. So yun yung klase ng viral na na-experience ko and I’m happy and thankful na until today parang hanggang ngayon nag-ke-carry over yun. So sobrang pasalamat ko talaga to all the fans who keep on making it viral. Malaking achievement para sa akin yun and sa show namin Kadenang Ginto before kasi it means nag-transcend yung mensahe na we were trying to give out there,” she recalled.

For families who have a gone through the same experience of having a member go through shaming online or victim blaming, Dimples hoped the public can be kinder to them.

“So many things hindi natin naiintindihan kasi hindi natin tinatanong, hindi natin alam kung bakit. I think information is power kasi when you don’t have the information, either you’re afraid or firing with blank bullets kasi hindi mo alam ang sinasabi mo. Para sa akin, I think generally mas pagtuunan natin ng pansin kung ano ang proseso at sistema na dapat sundin natin para mas maintindihan natin ang mga ganitong bagay.

“Kasi yung mga pangyayari like victim blaming and as soon as a video comes, we just don’t know exactly what to do. Hindi natin alam kung anong gagawin. Do we report it? Where do we report it? Pag rineport mo ba, gaano katagal bago may mangyari? Ano ba ang mga sistema? Feeling ko baka sakali with the show we’ll be able to find a way since madaming mga nangyayari na ganito din baka maibigyan natin ng solusyon and in that way mabigyan natin ng tulong yung mga nagdaan dito,” she said.

The 36-year-old kapamilya actress also shared how netizens should process the content they see online and not be quick to condemn.

“Ina-absorb ko pa lang yung pinagdaanan namin bilang Sicat family (in Viral Scandal), minsan na-o-overwhelm na ako eh. Masuwerte na lang ako na mahuhusay yung mga kasama ko na nagtatrabaho dito. So I know through the show we may be able to hopefully come out with a system on how we can go about things like this because this is happening every single day. And ang nangyayari lang is it comes out, we judge, we comment, we like, we share.  And then ganun na naman ulit di ba? So how do we put a stop to it? We find a way to learn it, determine, identification, and solution. Yun naman ang gusto natin dito di ba? Para magkaroon ng solusyon and to stop the cycle of a very unhealthy and toxic human connection,” she added.
