In his teleserye comeback after almost three years, actor Gian Magdangal admitted the offer to be part of the cast of the new series Viral Scandal was a welcome surprise for him.

“It’s one of the first times I’ve been in this major responsibility. I really have to admit that it’s very different, it’s a big adjustment especially for someone like me. The reading was very familiar, the process of being able to interact, I’m very thankful for my co-actors especially Jake (Cuenca) who also has experience in theater. We even had a rehearsal here so that was very familiar. But when it comes to going to the set, yung mga shots, ibang iba eh. Unang una malaki akong tao, iniisip ko na parang stage minsan na dapat hindi masyado malaki yung movement so liitan natin ng konti. So those were the adjustments,” he said.

In Viral Scandal, Gian plays the role of Bobby Ramones, the father of young politician Jiggs Ramones (played by Markus Paterson) and adopted brother of mayor Troy Ramones (played by Jake Cuenca) in the series.

“Yung role ko dito, tinutulungan ko si Markus para umangat siya sa posisyon kung nasaan yung kapatid ko dahil iniisip ko na yun dapat yung sa akin. My role here is very colorful. It was my first time meeting Markus here and we really connected very quickly because pareho kaming dad, that’s one. He’s also at that time in his life that he’s really so proud to be a father and we connected in that way very much because my character si Bobby Ramones, his issues or yung ipapakita niya na storyline [are] also being a frustrated son to his father Alberto Ramones na meron siyang strained relationship with the father and he also transfers that energy to his son Jiggs who’s also going through an issue. But at the same time, we’re handling a viral scandal and that’s where the story unfolds. And I’m here showing that struggle of a father.

“I’m sure a lot of fathers out there na hindi perfect sila sa mga responsibilidad nila sa pamilya nila being a father and ipapakita ko rin yun dito sa show na ito kung ano yung mga choices na napipilitan siyang gawin or kailangan niyang gawin para sa pagmamahal niya sa anak niya. Marami kasing mga dynamic na ganun na I’m sure maraming mga Filipino families. Hindi madali maging tatay sa panahon na ito. Marami siyang mahihirap na choices na kailangan niyang gawin. So his character also has that journey. It’s very fun,” he explained

Before he started working on the set of Viral Scandal, Gian said he had a process in coming up with his latest character.

“I really start to internally build my character choices  within the parameters na binigay din ng script siyempre. Para sa akin yung script yun yung bibliya ng actor eh at saka nung story how to move forward. My process din is also just really making those choices based on how I experienced life itself also.

For this character it’s very different naman for me. In theater, it’s really a group work also making the scenes. But here you’re on your on most of the time and compared to my theater roles before, this is a very different role. Let’s just say iba yung dynamic nito and I really had to prepare for a lot of other things and pull ideas from different experiences in my life which are very, very different, kumbaga yung character ko dito is very different from the real Gian. Hindi talaga ako ito eh (laughs). So usually nag-aahit talaga ako (laughs). Hindi ako ganito. But it’s fun and I’m enjoying it and I think that’s the most important thing, enjoying with your co-actors and I can’t stress enough how thankful I am being able to do this,” he said.
