Ever since she started working with singer and music producer JK Labajo last December for the single “Pagod Na Ako”, Janine Berdin said their collaboration was actually one of the most unexpected things to happen to her last year.
“Sobrang random lang actually kasi we haven’t even met in real life. Nag-uusap lang kami online and then just one day after he took a break from social media, nagka-exchange kami ulit ng music and stuff online and then he asked if I wrote songs. And then I let him hear it. I sent him a folder full of my songs and he didn’t reply to me for two days kaya sobrang kinabahan ako na my God baka ayaw niya yung mga kanta ko (laughs). And then sabi niya, ‘Punta tayo ng studio and then let’s work on music.’ So it went from there. He knows how grateful I am,” she shared during the Pagod Na Ako mediacon last November 15.
The 19-year-old singer and Tawag ng Tanghalan champion admitted she couldn’t help but feel a bit star struck after her first few meetings with JK.
“Siguro for the longest time hindi ko naisip na totoo. Kahit nung first time that we talked I kept checking if it was actually his account (laughs). Parang hindi ko kasi naisip and parang umabot sa point na I can’t talk to him kasi I feel like I look up to him kasi and so many people look up to him and everyone will say the same. Parang I can’t talk to him kasi feeling ko a small mistake baka maiba yung tingin niya sa akin. For the longest time I’ve felt that but I know I should just really focus on my music and he’s here to help me with that,” she recalled.
Even before she joined showbiz, Janine said she had been composing songs and was happy that her latest producer made the process even more memorable for her.
“Sobrang tagal ko na ring nagsusulat and siguro my whole life I’ve always wanted this so parang in a way, nag-pe-prepare na ako ng sobrang tagal. Kinabahan ako ng sobra but JK made it really easy and siyempre the people around me who really believed in me and made it so easy. I’ve always wanted this so parang lumabas lang din. I liked writing the song and I wanted to release the song. Everyone’s been through this feeling na parang napapagod tayo lahat. Aaminin ko nakakapagod talaga yung career ko minsan and like being away from my family. Everyone has something to be tired of. Pagod ako and I’m releasing this song for everyone to acknowledge na pagod din sila, ganun,” she explained.
Even though they are just one year apart in age, Janine said she learned a lot from working with the “Buwan” singer.
“Siguro number one is to believe in myself talaga and to not doubt kasi ever since ganun ako parang medyo nag-da-doubt ako sa sarili ko and nahihiya ako sa mga iniisip ko kung tama ba ‘to or like that. Siguro the number one thing he’s taught me is to remind myself na I should believe in myself,” she added.
