Four years after they first met at a sporting event abroad, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz and her Fil-Japanese boyfriend Julius Naranjo are now officially engaged. The Olympic gold-winning athlete received a surprise proposal from her boyfriend of three years and shared the news on her Instagram account last October 16, Saturday.
The proposal took place at the Vubble dining pod of Sheraton Manila at Resorts World Manila where Hidilyn thought she and Julius were just invited to an exclusive birthday party for the hotel’s general manager along with two other celebrity couples Iza Calzado and Ben Wintle and Lara Quigaman and Marco Alcaraz.
Julius chose the venue because of its romantic and private atmosphere and with help from Hidilyn’s manager Noel Ferrer, they were able to plan the whole proposal with help from the Sheraton to pretend that it was really an intimate celebration for their general manager. Hidilyn was made to believe that the camera team was present was there to cover their birthday party instead of a wedding proposal.
In a short video clip courtesy of Resorts World Manila, Julius is shown talking about the engagement ring he had specially made for his fiancée in collaboration with Manila Diamond Studio before he proposed to Hidilyn that same night.
“I told them to make it gold because she won gold. And then this is a barbell and they engraved ‘Tokyo 2020’ in the inside of the ring. It’s custom-made. They did a really great job,” he shared. According to Manila Diamond Studio, the design of the ring “was inspired by HIdilyn Diaz’s love, strength and passion.”
In an interview earlier this year with ANC, Hidilyn revealed that she was just waiting for Julius to pop the question and that she was ready to get married. The newly engaged couple will be leaving the country to go back to a training facility in Malaysia to gear up for the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championship which is scheduled from December 7 to 17 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
