James Reid has released a new single, entitled "Soda."
"It is a new sound for me," the actor-singer said during a virtual conference for "Soda."
“I just really wanted to start the year with something fresh. I’ve been working on it since 2020. It actually was a very heavy year, and I wrote the song during quarantine," he continued. "Basically, it became like a time that was very introspective. I guess this song is a reflection of that insight of learning to turn these negative things into positive experiences. Learning to ride the highs and lows."
James said he had the help of his former girlfriend Nadine Lustre, as well as producer Isagani Palabyab and artist Haissam "Massiah" Morton, in creating the song.
“I started this song myself," he said."I produced it myself. I just started creating the beat… and then I wrote to the song and I had one of my producers, Isagani, help bring in some instrumentalists to bring it more of that live feel."
“I [also] had help from Nadine and also Massiah, one of my other artists. They helped me with a couple of lines. Like Nadine wrote the line, ‘Don’t lose the stars in your eyes,’ which basically means don’t give up, don’t lose hope,' he added.
Just recently, James and Nadine collaborated on the latter's visual album, "Wildest Dreams." Asked what he thinks makes them great collaborators, the Careless Music founder said: “I guess because we know each other very well so she kind of knows what’s in my head so she’s able to pick up the idea very quickly, and Nadine has been improving a lot as a songwriter over the past two years."
In "Soda," James said the message is "to have an open mind and learn to see the light in things."
"Learn to see your own darkness as a teacher, and just to be present enough to make the most out of life’s surprises," he added.
According to James, there will be a music video, live performances, and "a lot [more] content coming out of this particular track." He also said that he has a few more songs lined up after "Soda."
"I'll be working on an album this year as well," he then revealed.
As for his fellow Careless artists and collaborators, James said there will be more music coming from both Nadine and Massiah.
":We’ll have more music coming from Nadine, and also her concert, which we’ll be starting very soon. We have an album from Massiah, which we’ve been working on. Bret (Jackson) and Massiah have been working really hard and it sounds great. Can’t wait to share that with everyone as well," he said.
"There will be a lot more. We have quite a few surprises coming within the first quarter... So there’s a lot to stay tuned into," he added.
