As director, creator, and co-producer of the latest iWanTFC horror anthology Horrorscope, director Ato Bautista SAID he wanted to incorporate the popularity of horoscopes in his story which spans four different episodes.
“When I was trying to conceptualize or to make a concept about something specifically sa horror kasi fan ako ng thrillers at horror, sabi ko ‘Ano ba yung isang bagay na meron tayo lahat na common sa lahat at kahit hindi mo siya gusto or paborito, alam mo?’ So nag-occur sa akin isang gabi nung nag-iisip ako na yung horoscope, yung signs. Alam mo yung sign mo by the date or the month you were born in. So common sa ating lahat yun. When I did my research, yung mga taong nagbabasa ng horoscope is yung iba naniniwala, yung karamihan hindi pero it relieves their stress, it entertains them, and pag kailangan nila, nabibigyan sila ng payo. So dun ko pinaikot yung concept,” he explained.
The talented director, whose last horror project was last year’s digital film Sitsit starring Jake Cuenca and Ivana Alawi, said that he wanted to make his latest horror film a cut above the rest. “Unang una, this is an anthology. Pangarap ko kasi talaga gumawa ng anthology, meaning each episode is independent of the other. So iba ibang genre ng horror yung puwede kong talakayin or gawin. Yung first yung Virgo suspense thriller or crime thriller. Part rin kasi siya ng horror eh. Tapos yung sumunod naman na episode Libra so exorcism, demonic possession horror talaga. tapos yung Leo naman is necromance ror pagkabuhay ng patay tapos may touch din ng LGBTQ+. So marami akong puwede i-touch. Puwede ako mag-tackle ng corruption, iba iba. At saka ito lang tingin ko na series, hindi ko alam sa ibang bansa, na naka-angkla siya sa horoscope ng isang tao or sa horoscope in general. Hence the title Horrorscope,” he said.
Direk Ato also said that his approach in Horrorscope was a mix of both modern and conventional styles in directing. “I think is completely unique and original so I hope na magustuhan niyo. It’s both unique and classic. I think wala naman akong ginagawang bago kasi ang horror is a tradition of books, a tradition of comics, a tradition of many formats so rini-render lang natin kung anong version natin,” he added.
Horroscope stars Charlie Dizon, Elisse Joson, Paulo Gumabao, and Fino Herrera. It will be available on iWanTFC starting January 13, 2021.
