Following the lead of her husband Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto who issued a press statement last August 2 in an open letter titled, ‘Mr. President: Hear the frontline stories firsthand and without filter,’ actress and 6th District Lipa congresswoman Vilma Santos-Recto put out her own open letter for the government later that day. She wrote, “Nakikiusap po ako sa ating pamahalaan na pakinggan ang mga hinaing ng ating medical community.”
The 66-year-old actress-turned-politician echoed the growing call of medical frontliners asking for help from the government regarding the current health situation. Sympathizing with their plight, she wrote, “The tipping point has been reached. We should not turn a deaf ear to your repeated calls for a reassessment of our national policies and programs in fighting this pandemic. We know that you will not give up unless everyone is healed. To our frontliners, we cannot thank you enough for everything that you have done and continue to do for us. We cannot turn a blind eye to your hard work and sacrifices, and all the never-ending risks your profession takes.”
Last May, the Star of All Seasons of the Philippines was one of the most vocal supporters of ABS-CBN regarding the issue of franchise renewal. She was also one of the 11 members of congress who voted for the Kapamilya franchise renewal which was ultimately not granted.
In her statement posted on her social media accounts last August 2, Vilma shared how much gratitude she had for the hardworking members of the healthcare community currently fighting the pandemic. “From the bottom of my heart, I SALUTE all of you and shall always be supportive of all efforts to address your concerns for you deserve nothing less. I cannot in conscious allow our country’s last line of defense fall. May God continue to guide and bless you each passing day,” she adds.
Medical front liners have been asking for a return to stricter quarantine measures in order to control the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases.
